Lunds universitet, Medicinska fakulteten, Inst. för laboratoriemedicin

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

The research group
The research group of Stem Cell Metabolism conducts research in hematology, especially hematopoietic stem cell biology and erythropoiesis. In this particular project, we aim to establish an efficient method that can induce maturation of immortalized human erythroid cell lines, which will enable these types of cells to become a future source of red blood cells for transfusion therapies. We will use advanced imaging technologies, flow cytometry and complex cell culture system, as well as standard molecular biology assays to achieve the goal. The group is led by group leader Kenichi Miharada. The Stem Cell Metabolism lab is embedded within the Lund Stem Cell Center, an internationally ranked research center as well as StemTherapy program.

Within the research group, we safeguard a workplace that is perceived as developing and stimulating for all employees.

We are seeking a research engineer for this challenging project. The employment is limited to 3 months part time at 75%,  with the desired date of admission on June 1 or by agreement.

Work duties and areas of responsibility
As research engineer within the research group the scientist will be involved in ongoing research in the lab aimed at testing selected chemical compound in our original differentiation protocol. Efficiency of maturation and quality of the generated cells will be assessed both at cellular and molecular levels using Cellomics Arrayscan, flow cytometry, quantitative RT-PCR, western blotting. Furthermore the research engineer is expected to establish assays for measuring bioactivity of the compound and assessing cellular-/geno-toxicity.

Requirements
Candidates are expected to have a strong background in cell biology and molecular biology, especially erythropoiesis and characterization of erythroid cells. Knowledge in hematopoiesis and erythropoiesis is an advantage.
Essential skills and requirements:

  • Documented ability to independently culture cells.
  • Proficiency in the most common molecular biology technologies.
  • Experience in handling and performing experiments on mice.
  • Documented ability to independently analyze cells using flow cytometry.
  • Experience from work with blood cells and their development

Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English are required for consideration.

Desirable
Experience from work with bioinformatic methods and statistics is desirable.
