Subject description Polymer Technology at Lund University is an interdisciplinary subject including the chemistry and physics of polymers, as well as the processing and applications of polymer materials.
The expanding use of renewable intermittent energy sources such as wind and solar power increases the need for large-scale energy storage. In this context, there is a requirement to develop efficient membrane-based redox flow batteries. The performance and lifetime of these batteries are very much depending on the ion transport properties and durability of the polymeric ion-exchange membrane. The purpose of the present research project is to chemically design, synthesize, and characterize ionic polymers and membranes for vanadium flow batteries. The main goal is to develop new synthetic strategies and knowledge how these materials should be molecularly designed in order to, e.g., minimize capacity loss through the crossover of vanadium ions. The experimental work will consist of organic synthesis, molecular characterization and polymerization of new monomers, polymer characterization, preparation of functional membranes, as well as analysis of electrochemical, mechanical and thermal properties in collaboration with an academic partner. The selected candidate will be placed in the research group of Prof. Patric Jannasch at the Department of Chemistry, which has extensive experience with the synthesis and studies of ionic polymers and membranes for different energy applications.
