Subject description The position of a Postdoctoral researcher is placed at the Department of Chemistry, Division of Biotechnology, which conducts research and education at undergraduate and graduate level within various branches of biotechnology. The specific research areas being pursued are industrial biotechnology, environmental biotechnology and biotechnology for health, involving both fundamental and applied aspects. Within industrial biotechnology, the division runs several multidisciplinary projects in collaboration with other research- and industrial partners, which involve the development and optimization of microorganisms and enzymes, and processes for transformation of renewable resources into chemical building blocks for sustainable chemicals and plastics suited for circular economy.

Work duties The main duties involved in a post-doctoral posistion are to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position shall include the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning.

The work duties also include:

  • Research within European Union´s Horizon 2020 project UPLIFT (Sustainable Plastics for Food and Drink Packaging Industry), involving 15 partners from 8 European countries. Research deals with screening, development, production and application of enzymes for plastic degradation, and development and application of microbial cells for production of carbon-neutral building blocks for new polymers.
  • Providing product samples for evaluation to the collaborating research groups
  • Participation in teaching in the division´s courses and supervision of master students
  • Participation in writing grant applications and articles for publication
  • Preparation of reports, participate in meetings with the project partners, make oral presentations
  • Administration related to the work duties.

Qualification requirements Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

  • Experience in:
    • bioinformatics, molecular modelling, protein visualization and modeling programs (YASARA, PyMol, PyRx, etc.).
    • performing heterologous protein production and purification, enzyme activity assays, kinetics, immobilization, protein engineering, and structural analysis.
    • Molecular biology and cloning techniques, synthetic biology and DNA assembly.
    • Analytical techniques, HPLC, GC, mass spectroscopy, NMR, flash chromatography, preparative HPLC, and circular dichroism.
    • Organic synthesis following safety regulations
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Good communication ability
  • Experience of publications in high impact journals
  • Experience of supervising students

Assessment criteria and other qualifications This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject. For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills.

Additional assessment criteria:

  • Postdoctoral experience in the area related to the research described above
  • Experience of working in different international research environments

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment This is a full-time, fixed-term employment from 2021-09-01 until 2023-08-31. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”) between Lund University, SACO-S, OFR/S and SEKO, dated 4 September 2008.
