Interdisciplinary research project on impacts on carbon pools and greenhouse gas exchanges during the early vegetation recovery years after a forest fire

To date, very little is known on the impact of wildfires on Sweden's boreal forest and soil ecosystems, and their feedback on the climate, particularly regarding the early post-fire recovery years. This gap creates a large uncertainty in national and global carbon budgets and impairs the predictions of climate models. Our project addresses this knowledge gap by assessing post-fire and forest management impacts by means of collecting crucial data on forest carbon stocks, and greenhouse gas (GHG) and energy budgets.

Duties

The researcher will prepare and execute field surveys, handle and process data of manual and automated GHG measurements, determine key drivers of GHG fluxes, and publish results in high-quality journals. The post is based in Lund, but includes fieldwork in central Sweden.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • A PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, with a focus on Environmental Science
  • A publication record commensurate with the career stage
  • Excellent knowledge in carbon cycling and GHG budgeting
  • Proficiency in both written and spoken English
  • Demonstrated proficiency in programming languages: Matlab, ArcGIS
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to work in a team but also independently, and to complete activities on time

Merits

  • Experience to independently plan and carry out field surveys, including GHG soil chamber measurements and possibly UAV surveys
  • Demonstrated knowledge in forest fire research and remote sensing approaches
  • Experience in multivariate statistics or spatio-temporal analysis, e.g. mixed effects modelling, time-series analysis, image analysis, empirical GHG modelling
  • Demonstrated skills in handling and analysis of large datasets
  • Driver's license for car (class B)
