About the subject

Research in Practical Philosophy at Lund University has, for some time, received international recognition for its contributions to Value Theory, the Philosophy of Action, Social Ontology, Individual Rights Theory and Moral Responsibility. In terms of education, the focus is set on ethics, (moral philosophy, metaethics, applied ethics, individual rights theory), politics (political philosophy), practical rationality (action theory, decision theory) as well as aesthetics and philosophy of religion. In Practical Philosophy, courses are given at an advanced level which provides an opportunity to specialise in a key area for one and two-year Master’s degrees. In collaboration with the Department of Political Science and Department of Economics, the subject also offers a Bachelor’s degree programme in Practical Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) which has been running since 2014.

Duties

The successful candidate will carry out teaching, research and supervision in Practical Philosophy as well as strive to further develop the educational and research environment alongside other colleagues in the department. Employment as a Senior Lecturer involves teaching at an undergraduate, advanced and research level, as well as supervisning students on the advanced level and doctoral students in Practical Philosophy. The position may also include the responsibility of managing the PPE programme and holding internal and/or external elected offices. Other assignments such as administrative tasks may also be included in the position. Moreover, the successful candidate will actively apply for research funding.

If the successful candidate does not have the required training for teaching and learning in higher education, as part of their duties, they must acquire the relevant training within the first two years of employment.

If the successful candidate cannot teach in Swedish, Danish or Norwegian upon employment, they are expected to acquire the skills to teach in Swedish within two years. Within two years, the candidate must also be able to undertake administrative and other pedagogical tasks that require Swedish skills.

Required qualifications

  • Completed doctoral degree or the corresponding research expertise or some other professional expertise that is of value to the subject matter of the post and the duties that it will involve.
  • Demonstrated teaching expertise.
  • Completed training in teaching and learning in higher education amounting to at least five weeks or equivalent competence acquired by other means.
  • Strong knowledge of English.

Assessment criteria

  • The degree of research, teaching, administrative and other expertise that is of value in view of the work duties and subject matter of the post as well as other personal skills of relevance to perform the duties well.
  • A good national and international standing as a researcher. 
  • Good teaching ability, including a good ability to conduct, develop and lead educational activities on different levels and using a variety of teaching methods.
  • An ability to supervise doctoral students to achieve a PhD.
  • An ability to engage with wider society and communicate his or her activities.
  • A good general ability to lead and develop activities.

As much attention shall be given to the assessment of teaching expertise as to the assessment of research expertise.

Desired qualifications

Desired qualifications in terms of research expertise include well-documented experience of research in at least one of Practical Philosophy’s core subjects (moral philosophy, metaethics, applied ethics, individual rights theory, political philosophy, action theory, decision theory, aesthetics, history of philosophy and philosophy of religion). In particular, research experience in one of the following areas: value theory, action theory and social ontology, individual rights theory and moral responsibility.

Desired qualifications in terms of teaching expertise are:

  • Subject-wide teaching experience at all teaching levels.
  • Experience supervising at undergraduate level, Master’s level as well as at a doctoral level resulting in a degree.
  • Further training in teaching and learning in higher education in addition to the five weeks that are required to be eligible.
  • Ability to teach in Swedish.

Special consideration will also be given to administrative skills, demonstrated ability to collaborate and leadership experience.
