Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

Subject description
We offer the opportunity for a researcher to join the conceptual design study for the ESSnuSB project funded by the European Union. The project is an international project with participants from the nuclear physics and particle physics divisions at the physics department at Lund University. The purpose of the project is to investigate the construction of a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment based on the ESS proton LINAC with relevant extensions and associated detector systems. The physics aim of the project is to provide a means to measure the CP-violating phase, delta-CP, of the Pontecorvo–Maki–Nakagawa–Sakata matrix, which may be of importance to explain the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe. The researcher will join the ongoing effort in Lund and focus on simulations and performance evaluation of the near detector suite of the ESSnuSB project. The work involves optimization of the near detector design using simulations tools such as the GENIE neutrino Monte Carlo generator, the GEANT4 toolkit and the ROOT analysis software, as well as other dedicated software used for simulation of neutrino detectors.

Work duties
The work duties include:
• Simulation and extraction of detector performance parameters for the near detector suite of the ESSnuSB project,
• Contributing to reports, and scientific articles for peer-reviewed journals, detailing the results of the work,
• Presentation of the results in collaboration meetings and conferences within the subject area,
• Supervision of degree projects for B.Sc and M.Sc together with colleagues in the project.

Qualification requirements
Applicants must have:
• A PhD or equivalent research qualification within the subject area of large- scale neutrino detector systems,
• Knowledge and background in neutrino physics and neutrino detection,
• Knowledge of simulations tools such as GENIE and GEANT4, or similar, and of data analysis frameworks such as ROOT are particularly meritorious.
• Very good oral and written proficiency in English.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications
Previous experience from working with detector simulation, development and experiment analysis within the specific field or in an adjacent field using similar methodology is meritorious.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment
We offer a fixed term full time employment of six months with possible extension up to one year depending on funding and after mutual agreement.

The position is available from October 1, 2021 or according to agreement.
