Workplace
The Centre for Mathematical Sciences has approximately 130 employees, with 30 in the section Mathematics, Faculty of Science, where this position is situated. The other divisions are Mathematics with Numerical Analysis, Faculty of Engineering, and Mathematical Statistics. Research at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences is conducted in Linear and Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations, Dynamical Systems, Harmonic Analysis, Operator Theory and Complex Analysis, Scientific Computing and Numerical Analysis, Algebra, Differential Geometry, Image Analysis, Machine Learning and Computer Vision, as well as Mathematical Statistics, Probability Theory, and Mathematical Didactics. The degree courses lead to Bachelor, Master, and PhD degrees and, at the Faculty of Engineering, to Civil Engineering degrees

Post-doctoral fellow in mathematics with focus on nonlinear partial differential equations

Job assignments
The research will focus on nonlinear partial differential equations. The position is a part of the research project From water waves to fusion - mathematical analysis of steady ideal flows, financed by the Swedish Research Council. The project focuses on analysis of a mathematical model for steady ideal fluid flows in three dimensions (Euler’s equations) using tools from nonlinear functional analysis (local and global bifurcation theory, spectral theory, variational methods, Nash-Moser iteration). There are potential applications both in water waves and plasma physics – especially the confinement of plasmas in fusion reactors. If the applicant wishes, some teaching can also be included (at most 20%).

Qualifications
A PhD degree, awarded (or planned to be awarded before the commencement of the project) in mathematics is a requirement. You should have a strong background in partial differential equations, preferably related to fluid mechanics, free boundaries, nonlinear waves and/or pattern formation. You should have the ability to plan and carry out research of high quality and this should be reflected in your publications. You should also be motivated, have initiative, be able to work independently and in groups, and be perseverant. Good knowledge in spoken and written English is a requirement.

Eligibility
Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Basis of Assessment

This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment will primarily be based on your research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject. Here the quality of your publications plays a very big role, but the description of your research and your motivation for applying are also important. At a possible interview, your ability to orally present your research will be tested. In addition, the assessment will be based on the qualifications mentioned above.

Type of employment

This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of a maximum of 2 years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”) between Lund University, SACO-S, OFR/S and SEKO, dated 4 September 2008.
