Subject description

The subject polymer technology includes research on fundamental and applied areas of polymer and macromolecular science and engineering. The relationships between macromolecular structure, microstructure and different materials properties of homogeneous and heterogeneous polymers are central within our research.

The research is about controlling and studying the structure and properties of heterogeneous polymer systems such as block and graft copolymers, ionomers, blends, nano-composites and biopolymers. This includes the design, synthesis and functionalization of complex macromolecular structures using a variety of polymerization strategies, as well as an extensive characterization of their structural, thermal, viscoelastic, and transport properties.

The work tasks are focused on the design and synthesis of new bio-based monomers and polymers based on building blocks from renewable resources, as well as the characterization of the structure and properties of these materials. The main goal is to develop new synthesis strategies and new knowledge on how these bio-based polymers should be molecularly tailored to meet the requirements profiles for various industrial applications where plastics from fossil raw materials are used today. The research includes chemical synthesis and molecular characterization of monomers and polymers, production of new polymeric materials, as well as analysis of, for example, mechanical and thermal properties, as well as microstructure and processability. The activities take place partly in collaboration with industry. Departmental service in the form of responsibility for instruments, teaching at undergraduate and advanced level, as well as supervision of degree workers and doctoral students will also be included in the employment.

Work duties

  • Research within the subject area
  • Teaching in the first, second and third cycles of studies
  • Opportunity for training in higher education teaching and learning shall be given if teaching is part of the work duties.
