Lunds universitet, Naturvetenskapliga fakulteten, biologiska institutionen

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

Work duties
The research focus is to investigate how selection from pathogens results in adaptations in the immune system of the hosts. The wild study species are wild birds. The Biologist will perform a wide range of different molecular genetic techniques, such as DNA and RNA extraction, PCR, preparation of libraries for high-throughput sequencing and down-stream bioinformatic analyses. The Biologist will be part of Helena Westerdahl’s research group at the Molecular Ecology and Evolution Lab (MEEL), Department of Biology, Lund University, Sweden. MEEL constitutes a strong research environment with six senior scientists, their PhD students and post docs, master project students and visiting scientists, in total about 30 persons. MEEL spans several research areas and many study organisms and is inter-connected by many within-group collaborations and shared (molecular, immunological, genetic and genomic) methods. For more information about MEEL see:

Qualifications

  • Education: MSc in Biology, preferably a Masterproject in immunoecology using Molecular genetic techniques in non-model organisms
  • Experience: Molecular genetic lab-work, such as DNA-extraction, PCR and preparations for Sanger sequencing
  • Knowledge: Fluent in english (written and spoken), R or SPSS for statistical analyses and Geneious for handling DNA-sequences
  • Documented University Courses: Courses in Evolutionary Animal Ecology, Genetics, and Molecular Biology/Ecology
  • Driver’s license

Other merits
Experience: Work experience with molecular genetic techniques to genotype genetic diversity in coding DNA in non-model organisms
We will place great emphasis on personal suitability. Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen the work within the research group.
