Lund University, Department of Astronomy and Theoretical Physics

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

We are seeking to fill a two-year position with a qualified researcher to work on studies of the Milky Way with particular emphasis on exploring our Galaxy in ways that will constrain models of galaxy formation. The researcher will be expected to pay explicit attention to selection functions in big surveys and how they can be applied to obtain observational data that can better constrain the models. In Lund, researchers are working towards providing such constraints to models.

Work duties

The tasks are divided in to two major themes:
1) Research how the Milky Way formed and evolved by using existing and upcoming data from spectroscopic surveys (e.g. APOGEE, WEAVE and 4MOST) with the aim to constrain models of galaxy formation.
2) Participation in one or two large spectroscopic surveys with specific emphasis on working towards a better understanding and application of the survey selection function.

Qualification requirements

The applicant must hold a PhD in astronomy or astrophysics. We are looking for a specialist in the use of large spectroscopic surveys to explore the formation of the Milky Way. Being a specialist means, among other things, knowing how to handle the information contained in the studies, such as quality markers for elemental abundances. The applicant must also have knowledge of one or more methods for determining ages for stellar populations, for example in the disk. Articles published in peer-reviewed journals can advantageously be cited as documentation.

Past or ongoing participation in 4MOST and/or WEAVE or similar projects is necessary in order to carry out the work. Such experiences are thus a necessary condition to fullfil.

Assessment critera and other qualifications

Experience from working groups in such projects, for example in quality control, is a merit. Good scientitific merits, for example in the form of well cited publications, is a merit.

Terms of employment

Fixed-term employment full-time for two years.

Instructions on how to apply
