Media and Communication Studies belongs to the faculty of Social Science at Lund University. The discipline has a long tradition of successful and internationally renowned research in both theoretical and empirical aspects. The research environment is marked by methodological curiosity, exploring a variety of methods. We cherish this tradition but encourage originality and novelty in thinking. We want to strengthen our profile further with this call for a new professor. We are looking for a person with exceptional abilities in understanding and interpreting empirical material, as well as a deep and broad experience in Media and Communication theory development, encompassing the multidisciplinary character of the subject. Principal duties

The duties include research, teaching and supervision from undergraduate to PhD studies within the area of Media and Communication Studies, as well as administration. One particularly important duty is to develop the subject’s research by actively applying for external research grants and actively engaging in the international Media and Communication debate. The supervision of doctoral students, and teaching on undergraduate and advanced courses, are also among the key duties. A limited amount of administrative tasks are part of the position.

Qualification requirements

A person who has demonstrated both research and teaching expertise shall be qualified for employment as a professor (Higher Education Ordinance chapter 4, section 3). Research production shall be current and strengthen and develop/renew ongoing research traditions within the subject. Research expertise is to be demonstrated through independent research initiatives that to a significant extent exceed the qualification required for appointment as an associate professor, in terms of quality and quantity.

Teaching expertise shall be given equally importance as research expertise. Teaching expertise is to be demonstrated through teaching experience in the first, second and third cycles. The applicant is to have completed at least five weeks of training in teaching and learning in higher education or have equivalent knowledge that has been acquired in some other way, unless there are special reasons to the contrary. Applicants who have not studied teaching and learning in higher education are expected to take such a course within one year of taking up the position. Teaching staff at Lund University must also comply with the general qualification requirements of being suited to and having the general ability required to complete the duties of the post well.

To be qualified the applicant must have supervised at least one doctoral student up to the completion of his or her PhD, either as principal supervisor or supervisor.

Assessment criteria

It is of the utmost importance that the applicant is established as an independent researcher at an international level through having been awarded research grants as the principal applicant in a competitive process, publications in prominent international research journals and publishing houses, documented ability to plan and lead research projects, documented national and international research cooperation, and documented width regarding research areas. Documented expertise in supervising doctoral students is of particular importance.
The applicant shall also demonstrate good teaching abilities, including very good ability to develop and lead teaching and other pedagogical activities on different levels and with various teaching methods.

The applicant shall also show a good ability to engage with wider society and to disseminate information on activities, as well as good abilities in general to lead and develop these activities.
Teaching will be conducted in Swedish and English. Non Scandinavian-speaking applicants are expected to acquire a knowledge of Swedish at the level required to fulfil ordinary work duties within education and administration within the first two years of employment. There are opportunities for Swedish language training within Lund University.
