Lunds universitet, LTH, Fysiska institutionen

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

The Division of Mathematical Physics is a joint division at the Science Faculty and the Technical Faculty (LTH) and is part of the Department of Physics at Lund University. Research is conducted mainly in quantum-mechanical many-particle physics, including theoretical nuclear structure theory, nanostructure physics, quantum information, atomic physics (theory), and materials modeling. There are intense collaborations, both within Lund and on the international scene.

Work duties
The topic of the position is theoretical quantum physics with specialization on man-particle quantum systems, specifically ultra-cold atomic quantum gases and quantum optics in general. Emphasis is on developing numerical methodology for the approximate description of bosonic or fermionic quantum droplets and the effect of quantum fluctuations in these systems.

The work tasks include:

  • Creating and extending existing theoretical models for simulating few- and many-body quantum systems, focusing on Bose-Einstein condensates and fermionic ultra-cold quantum gases, and hybrid systems between quantum optical systems and nanostructures.
  • Extension of methodology for quantum dynamics and modeling of bosonic and fermionic many-body systems.
  • Help with the supervision of Bachelor’s and Master’s thesis and supervision of Ph.D. students.

Tasks may include administration coupled to the above work description.

Qualification requirements
Applicants must have:

  • A Ph.D. or equivalent research qualification within the subject of the position.
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Excellent knowledge in theoretical quantum physics, quantum optics, ultra-cold gases, condensed matter theory in general, and experience in numerical modeling of few- and many-particle quantum systems.
  • Experience with the development and application of typical quantum-theoretical many-particle methods.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications

  • Experience in the handling of numerically time-intense methods
  • Experience with effective algorithms to handle different aspects of quantum-physical many-body systems
  • Experience with supervision of Bachelor or Master students or Ph.D. students.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive, and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment
Time-limited employment 100%, 12 months, with a possibility to prolong for another year.
