About the research group
In the research group Medical Radiation Physics, Malmö, research is conducted in the interdisciplinary subject of medical radiation physics, where techniques for diagnostics and treatment with ionizing and non-ionizing radiation are studied and further developed for the best possible use and radiation safety. The research group has been at the forefront for several years and in some cases a world leader in many parts of the research area. The research group is led by Professor Lars E Olsson and consists of full-time researchers, research students, technical and administrative staff. Professor Christopher Rääf conducts research in environmental radiology and radiation protection with responsibility for the research group's radiometry laboratory. The laboratory is located at the Imaging Center at Skåne University hospital in Malmö. We are now looking for a PhD student for our project “Mobile radiometry for decision support for decontamination measures in residential areas”. The is a full-time position with preliminary starting date September 2021 or otherwise agreed.
Project description
The purpose of this doctoral project is to determine how common radiometry systems can quantify the effectiveness of various radiological remediation measures and the averted radiation doses to residents in areas affected by radioactive fallout. The doctoral student's specific task will initially be to install the GEANT 4 platform both locally and in connection with Lund University's local computer cluster LUNARC, and to build a model of various typical northern European residential areas. Thereafter, simulations will be carried out for different radioactive depositions and clean-up scenarios over these residential areas, to calculate the measurement response of a number of commonly occurring radiometric instruments linked to the national emergency preparedness in Sweden, including unmanned airborne vehicle (UAV) measuring systems. Furthermore, the doctoral student will, through GEANT4 simulations, relate how different remediation measures affect controlled radiation doses, e.g. age and gender to cancer risk for fictitious inhabitants of the modeled landscape.
Work duties
The main duties of the doctoral candidate are to conduct their research studies which include participation in research projects and graduate courses. The research assignments must be compiled and submitted for publication in scientific journals.
The doctoral position also includes 20% compulsory participation in laboratory maintenance (including internal / external exercises in the field) and quality control of the research group's mobile radiometry system.
Other assignments may also occur.

Eligibility
Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who: have completed a second-cycle degree, have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.
Basis of assessment
The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.
