Project background

The doctoral student will work within the multi-year research project "Circular Mass Management", whose goal is to significantly improve knowledge about health and environmental risks with recycling of contaminated materials in community building, how these risks are assessed and what bearing they have on the materials' status as waste or product. Communication of results to the municipality, the public and stakeholders is an important part of the project, and accordingly knowledge of Swedish is required for this position.

Work duties

The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research studies which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses. The work duties can also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than20%).

We are looking for a doctoral student who will use scientific methods in both environmental science, ecotoxicology and chemistry to carry out interdisciplinary research in an environmental science project. Specifically, we will examine conditions and limitations in today's risk assessment of material recycling in construction, collect data and information about the materials' properties and how they are used, collect samples, prepare and perform lab experiments with respect to critical exposure routes and risks, and develop relevant criteria for risk assessment and conditions for circular material flows. The doctoral student will have a leading role in conducting both field studies and lab experiments.

The research project is interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral, ie the doctoral student will communicate and collaborate with other researchers, representatives from the Swedish Transport Administration and the construction industry as well as authorities.

Requirements

We are looking for a highly motivated and communicative person with a Master’s degree or equivalent (including a degree project of 30 credits or more), in any one of the subjects environmental science, environmental engineering or equivalent.

The candidate is expected to have good collaborative abilities, and abilities to develop and run projects independently.

The candidate should also meet the following requirements:

  • Good knowledge of the Swedish and/or EU Environmental and waste legislation
  • Knowledge in ecology, ecotoxicology and / or chemistry
  • Very good knowledge of Swedish in language and writing
  • Very good knowledge of English, in both writing and language
  • Experience of scientific writing
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills

It is of merit to have

  • Practical experience of working in labs and / or fields
  • Experience of / education about environmental and / or health risks
  • Experience of / education in chemicals or (eco) toxicology
  • Experience of field work (provincial collection of soil, groundwater, inventory, etc.)
  • Experience of statistical methods
  • Experience of working with decision-making bodies / societal actors
  • Experience of working with construction projects

Eligibility

Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who

  • have completed a second-cycle degree
  • have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or
  • have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998:80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.
