The graduate school

The 2030 Agenda is the framework for sustainable development that the world’s nations have signed to end extreme poverty, reduce inequalities, solve the climate crisis, promote peace and equity and much more.

We now welcome applicants from various disciplinary backgrounds who want to take an active role in 2030 Agenda research to apply for the new PhD student positions. The graduate school offers a unique opportunity to gain interdisciplinary perspectives on global challenges and contribute to current research while deepening your subject knowledge.

The graduate school has PhD students enrolled with all faculties of the university. You will be associated with a specific research studies programme, and simultaneously take part in two of the university-wide interdisciplinary research studies courses, developed on the basis of the issues defined by the Sustainable Development Goals. The courses provide great potential to develop new forms of collaboration and work for change across disciplinary boundaries. Besides the research courses, you will participate in several activities linked to the graduate school in order to take an active part in the global sustainability agenda and to advance the research front on issues concerning the 2030 Agenda, for example through seminars, conferences, study trips and collaborations with various societal stakeholders.

The research group

The PhD student will belong to the research group Clinical Infection Medicine. This research group conducts research on infectious diseases with major impact on global health, mainly HIV and tuberculosis. The research group has established collaborations with several other medical disciplines, in particular medical microbiology. A large part of the research activities within this research group are carried out in a research unit in Ethiopia (Adama LU Research Site, which is affiliated to LU and to a federal Ethiopian research institute). The research group is led by Professor Per Björkman, and contains 5-6 PhD students as well as several post-doc researchers. The research group is based at the Department of Translational Medicine, Malmö. Laboratory activities are mainly carried out at laboratories at BMC, Lund, managed by collaborating researchers in medical microbiology.

We are currently looking for a PhD student for a full-time position. Starting date by agreement.

Project plan

The overall objective of the project is to contribute to achievement of the goal to eliminate HIV as a public health threat by the year 2030. The project is based on a prospective cohort of people with HIV who are recruited and followed at health facilities in Ethiopia. It consists of three sub-studies on the associations between socio-demographic conditions, HIV transmission and drug resistance. The project contains both clinical and laboratory components, and will utilize molecular biological as well as epidemiological methodologies.

Job description

  • Research work according to the project plan.
  • Participation in educational activities within the research school Agenda 2030, as well as participation in the mandatory research education program for PhD students at the Faculty of Medicine.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • MSc in medical or biomedical sciences.
  • Experience of laboratory work.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (oral and written).
  • Preparedness to spend longer periods at the research unit in Ethiopia (at least 3 months annually).

Great attention will be paid on personal suitability for the position. The applicant must have good capacity for collaboration, and must be able to work in a structured way, be flexible and be able to withstand stress

Additional requirements:

  • Experience of international work in healthcare or research/education within the field of medicine (preferably in low-income countries)
  • Experience of work at the research unit Adama LU Research Site and/or other work related to research in Ethiopia
  • Knowledge and experience of research in the field of infection medicine
  • Experience of research related to molecular biology


Eligibility
Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who- have completed a second-cycle degree- have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or- have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.
