The Research Group

The research group for Transfusion Medicine is focused on the biology of the red blood cell, especially blood group genetics and blood formation. The group is located at the Division of Hematology and Transfusion Medicine, which in turn is at the Department of Laboratory Medicine. The group is led by Professor Martin L Olsson, who is one of the world's most prominent in the field and has received numerous awards for his blood group research. The team currently consists of of twelve group members from different parts of the world. We see our different backgrounds as a strength that makes us better equipped to solve tomorrow's research challenges together. We listen to and value everyone's opinions at group meetings and try to weigh in different perspectives before decisions are made.

We are now looking for an associate researcher to independently conduct research projects in our group, in consultation with the group leader, and to take on the role of the "lab manager" in the group. The position is a full time permanent position starting October 1, 2021, or according to agreement.

Work duties and area of expertise

The person must independently, but in consultation with the group leader, conduct research projects in the subject area of ​​transfusion medicine and nearby fields. These projects typically involve advanced immunohematological, protein chemistry and cell and molecular biology techniques. Writing research reports and applying for grants may also be relevant within the framework of the projects.

The position also includes being the "lab manager" for the group and its research facilities at Biomedical Center (BMC). This involves i.a. distribution among the group members of practical tasks to manage and keep the laboratory in good condition. In addition, tasks within health and work environment safety incl. preparation of risk assessments, chemical / KLARA management, LabGuru administration and to assist with theoretical and practical supervision of students, clinical and doctoral students in the laboratory. If necessary, making work contributions in other group member's projects may also be required. Together with the administrator, tasks within ordering and invoice control can also occur.

Qualifications

The position requires:

  • PhD degree in a relevant subject and with a pronounced focus on experimental and / or translational research
  • Knowledge and documented experience of working with blood-related research, especially red blood cells and protein chemical methods

Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability. You must have a good ability to work independently and have good planning, structural and prioritization skills. You must also have excellent communication and collaboration skills as we work closely within the research team. 

The following are merits for the position:

  • Documented experience of supervision of coworkers and students at various levels in the academic system
  • Knowledge of the regulations regarding health and work environment safety, chemicals and GMM
