The Department of Clinical Sciences in Lund (IKVL) is one of six institutions at the Faculty of Medicine, Lund University. The department has a broad collaboration, both within the faculty and within other units at the University. IKVL also has a well-developed collaboration with Skåne University Hospital (SUS) and Region Skåne as well as the surrounding community and business. This is topromote clinical and experimental translational research, development and education.

The research group
The main supervisor will be Associate Professor Malin Inghammar, Department of Clinical Sciences Lund, Section for Infection Medicine. The doctoral student will be situated at and work in close collaboration with the research group EPI@Lund, lead by Professor Jonas Björk. Within EPI@Lund PhD students and senior researchers address different research questions associated with major societal issues by combining modern epidemiological methodology with detailed population data on individual level. Research on applied causal inference is also a theme. The research is multi-disciplinary and a Research Collaboration Initiative, stretching over multiple research areas for improvement of pandemic management has recently been established.

We are currently looking for a Doctoral student for a full-time position. Starting date 1 December 2021 or by agreement.

Project plan and work tasks
The overall aim of the project is to investigate long term effects of severe sepsis through registry based epidemiological studies and to study how socio-economic factors impact the risk of sepsis. The project is divided into three to four separate studies, in which long-term mortality, cardiovascular and psychiatric complications, socio-economic and mediating factors will be assessed through statistical analyses of individual level data from quality registries and national population and health registries.

The doctoral student will perform the research according to the research plan. Methodological issues may also be explored within the project. The doctoral student will participate in the educational program for PhD students at the Faculty of Medicine and is expected to present research findings at seminars, national and international meetings.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • MSc in Epidemiology, Public Health, Health Economy, Mathematical or Applied Statistics.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (oral and written)

Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities. The successful applicant is driven, curious and responsible. It is required that you have a good communicative ability and are good at collaborating. In addition, the tasks require that you are organized and have the ability to prioritize your tasks.

Highly desirable:

  • Experience from quantitative data management and statistical analysis.
  • Knowledge and experience of medical, public health or epidemiological research issues.
  • Previous experience of working with Swedish or Nordic registry infrastructure and registry data.

Eligibility
Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who- have completed a second-cycle degree- have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or- have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.
