ICOS Carbon Portal is hosted by the Department of Physical Geography and Ecosystem Sciences and is part of ICOS ERIC, the legal entity of the Integrated Carbon Observation System that provides high quality long-term measurements of greenhouse gas exchange in the domains of atmosphere, ecosystems and ocean.  Carbon Portal offers open access to all ICOS high-quality and standardised greenhouse gas data, as well as scientific and educational products produced by our scientific users. The Carbon Portal is thus a 'one-stop shop' for all ICOS data products. Carbon Portal also (co-)develops web services for the user community that support the scientific exploration of the data.

Work duties
ICOS has a strong observational network producing reliable, high quality data. As a highly distributed research infrastructure, the operations require coordination and continuous development.

Further developing technologies and observational approaches is one strategic goal of ICOS often supported through projects by the European Commission. ICOS has recently successfully acquired the H2020 project in the context of the European Green Deal ‘Pilot Application in Urban Landscapes - towards integrated city observatories for greenhouse gases’ (PAUL). The project will support the European Green Deal by creating capabilities to observe and verify greenhouse gas emissions from densely populated urban areas across Europe. In order to complement the project coordination team, ICOS is seeking an experienced project coordinator.

The main responsibilities related to this role are:

  • Coordination of the project in close cooperation with the coordination team and the executive board
  • Managing the PAUL support team, consisting of supporting personnel at ICOS Head Office and Carbon Portal
  • Keeping the overview over and supporting the workflow of the project, including the timely submission of deliverables
  • Supporting the scientific integration of the project
  • Supporting the dissemination of the project towards major players such a WMO, Copernicus and national stakeholders
  • Contributing to other strategically connected projects like CoCO2, IG3IS and COPERNICUS
  • The role also contains publication and report writing, preparation of presentations

Qualifications

Requirements

  • A successful candidate should have a background in Earth System Science; a university degree, preferably a PhD or similar experience
  • She or he should also have excellent managerial, process, and prioritizing skills
  • An ability to see the bigger scientific picture, but also outstanding leadership and negotiation skills with ample experience in European projects.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as independent critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Documented experience of publication and report writing as well as preparation of presentations
  • Fluent spoken and written English are required

 Other merits

  • Mastery of one or more major European languages will be beneficial

Terms of employment
