Subject description
The Division of Atomic Physics at the Faculty of Engineering (LTH), Lund University, Sweden has a staff of over 50 researchers including guest researchers and graduate students. The research at the division is mainly based on the use of lasers, ranging from diode lasers to terawatt lasers at the High-Power Laser Facility. Some areas of research are: fundamental atomic and molecular physics including interactions between intense laser-fields and matter and XUV laser spectroscopy, quantum electronics, quantum optics and solid state spectroscopy, applied molecular spectroscopy, laser applications in medicine and biology, and industrial applications.
A large fraction of the research performed at the High-Power Laser Facility is centered around generation and application of ultrashort, coherent light pulses with very short wavelengths, in the extreme ultraviolet wavelength region, a research area where the group in Lund has very good international reputation. These short pulses are created either when strong laser pulses are focused in a gas or at large scale free electron laser facilities.
The work will be performed in close collaboration with Albert-Ludvigs-Universität Freiburg and some part of the time might be spent there.
Special description of the topic
Experimental work with the generation, control and application of coherent extreme ultraviolet (XUV) light to control ultrafast processes aiming towards quantum control. The coherent XUV light is created either through high order harmonic generation or at free electron laser facilities.
