Subject description
The research groups of Tobias Uller feiner-uller-group.se | and Charlie Cornwallis Cornwallis Group – Research into Cooperation, Sex, Disease and Evolutionary Innovations (charliecornwallis.org) are recruiting a fully-funded researcher in evolutionary biology. The project aims to use microalgae and experimental evolution to study evolvability. Theory predicts that selection in variable environments can modify gene regulatory networks to make new genetic mutants with desirable trait combinations appear more frequently. This, in turn, could potentially facilitate the response to selection in more extreme environments. This project will test this theory using a combination of experimental evolution, phenotypic and genetic engineering, and analyses of metabolic, transcriptomic and genomic data. The project is part of an international research programme that provides opportunities for career development. The starting date is negotiable and funding is available for three years.

Work duties

  • Active participation in the design and implementation of selection lines in microalgae
  • Carrying out experimental assays using environmental and genetic perturbation
  • Collection and analysis of phenotypic, transcriptomic and genomic data
  • Co-supervision of MSc degree projects
  • Dissemination of the acquired insights, including writing of scientific publications

Qualification requirements

Applicants must have:

  • A PhD or equivalent research qualification within evolutionary biology or closely adjacent fields
  • Very good oral and written English
  • A comprehensive understanding of evolutionary theory
  • Documented ability to develop and complete high-quality research
  • Evidence of organization skills, statistical analyses and laboratory techniques

The following are highly desirable:

  • Experience with experimental evolution, especially with algae or similar micro-organisms
  • Expertise in the analyses of metabolomic, transcriptomic, or genomic data
  • Evidence of an ability to work independently and in teams
