Solid State Physics

The research at the division of Solid State Physics is focused around different aspects of nanophysics, ranging from materials science to biophysics, to different applications. The division plays a major role in NanoLund, the major interdisciplinary research environment within nanoscience and nanotechnology at Lund University, and it hosts Lund Nano Lab, which is a central key facility for fabrication of material and devices on the nanoscale. The division is also heavily involved in the undergraduate education, especially within the “Engineering Nanoscience” program.

Research Area

In recent years, a research group has together with cooperators developed ellipsometry with THz radiation and its applications for characterization of semiconductor materials and devices. The optical Hall effect is one of the advanced characterization methods that gives access to the properties of electric charge carriers. The method has been applied to two-dimensional systems like nitride-based high-electron-mobility transistors and graphene but also to semiconductors with large bandgap and low symmetry like Ga2O3. These materials and structures are the basis for next-generation high-frequency and high-power devices which are developed together with leading Swedish industrial partners.

A direction that shall be explored further is to investigate electron spin resonances by THz ellipsometry, i.e., high-field EPR. The aim is to develop an instrument and strategies based on polarization-optical methods. This shall open new paths in defect characterization in semiconductors. The work is focused on basic research but has strong relations to future concepts for application in quantum technology.

Work duties

As a researcher, your duties mainly involve conducting research. The main research focus for this position is on THz materials analysis and development of new scientific equipment. The applicant is expected to expand the application range of THz ellipsometry and optical Hall effect towards electron-spin-resonance ellipsometry. The method shall in first place be applied to materials sciences, particularly investigations of defects in semiconductors.

The applicant must have documented skills in design and implementation of ellipsometry setups as well as characterization of semicondiuctors by ellipsometry in a wide spectral range. The applicant is also expected to cooperate with the Masters and PhD students in the research group and cooperators in various projects, as well as to participate in regular meetings and seminars.

Qualification requirements

Applicants must have:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English
  • A PhD or equivalent research qualification within the subject of the position. The degree should be physics, materials science or equivalent with focus on semiconductor optics
  • Proficiency in THz ellipsometry instrumental development

Assessment criteria and other qualifications

  • Experience from a post-doc relevant for the employment
  • Deep knowledge of semiconductor physics
  • Proven record of writing scientific articles
  • Experience with software development
  • Leadership abilities and experiences

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment

The position is time-limited to 2 years and is full-time.

Instructions on how to apply

Applications shall be written in English and be compiled into a PDF-file containing:

  • résumé/CV, including a list of publications
  • a general description of past research and future research interests (no more than three pages)
  • contact information of at least two references
  • copy of the doctoral degree certificate, and other certificates/grades that you wish to be considered

Applicants are also required to answer the job specific questions in the final step of the application process.
