Lund University, Faculty of Science, Department of Geology

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

Subject description
Research associated with a project grant from the Swedish Research Council with focus on identifying planetary waves in Earth’s core through studies of changes in Earth’s magnetic field over the past 10,000 years. Within the project we will develop new and more effective methods to reconstruct changes in Earth’s magnetic field based on palaeomagnetic data from sediment cores with dating uncertainties.

Work duties include

  • To further improve a new Bayesian geomagnetic field modelling approach developed by our group, with an emphasis on more effective ways to treat correlated age uncertainties associated with palaeomagnetic data from sediemnt cores.
  • To implement and test alternative MCMC methods to better deal with problems associated with complex posterior distributions in existing age-depth models based on stratigraphic data.

Qualification requirements
Applicants must have:

  • A PhD in geophysics with a focus on palaeomagnetism.
  • Extensive knowledge of Bayesian statistics.
  • Extensive experience of palaeomagnetic analyses and assessment of uncertainties in palaeomagnetic data.
  • Experience of modelling Earth’s magnetic field based on palaeomagnetic data.
  • Good cooperation and communication skills.
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications
Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
