Project Assistant in Biophotonics Evaluating lidar surveilence of forestry pests

Subject description

We are developing entomological laser radar for monitoring insects and pests in forestry setting, and now need assistance in evaluation of collected lidar data from bark beetle field campaigns. Field data from the Nyteboda forest were collected in 2020 and 2022 from conventional traps as well as from laser radar and a commercial infrared sensor. We now need assistance with data analysis and possibly minor additional field experiments.

Work duties

  1. Learn how to import, process, calibrate, evaluate and assess entomological lidar and NIR sensor data quality.
  2. Improvements to the software for controlling the instruments
  3. Compare observational properties to caged reference measurements of bark beetles.
  4. Correlate lidar and NIR sensor data with pheromone trap counts from 2020 and 2022
  5. Apply advanced statistical clustering methods and investigate synergetic applications.
  6. Scientific reporting

The proposed work will be within the frame of a project funded by Formas entitled: Combining laser radar and genomics to predict dispersal, habitat and outbreak of forestry pests. We plan to develop this work further to a future PhD position.

Qualifications

Applicants must have:

  • M. Sc. directed towards Photonics
  • Experience with lidar and/or continuous wave lidars
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Excellent skills in Matlab

Other merits

Documented experience in the biophotonics area is beneficial, such as master thesis work and/or scientific publications, and experience in insect surveillance.

We will place great emphasis in personal suitability. Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
