Energy and Building Design

Subject description
The subject addresses energy and environmental building design towards low climate impact and healthy built environment during the whole life cycle in cold climates. Special focus will be given to simulation and calculation methodologies of energy use and production, and embodied energy and carbon. The scope includes buildings and urban areas, rural developments and communities, both new and retrofit solutions.

Work duties
Work duties include:

  • Research within the subject area.
  • Teaching in the first, second and third cycles of studies.
  • Collaboration with industry and wider society.
  • Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students.
  • Actively seeking external research funding.
  • Collaborate with The International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics at Lund University regarding strategies for sustainable cities and buildings.
  • Collaborate with teachers within the Master's Programme in Energy-Efficient and Environmental Building Design at Lund University.
  • Contribute to further establish Lund University expertise in this field and thereby attract prominent researchers, teachers and students.
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above.

Qualification requirements 
Appointment as a Professor requires that the applicant has:

  • Demonstrated research expertise.
  • Demonstrated teaching expertise.
  • Completed at least five weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning, or acquired equivalent knowledge by other means, unless there are valid reasons. 

Assessment criteria
When assessing the applicants, special importance will be given to research and teaching expertise within the subject, with greater importance awarded to research expertise.

The assessment criteria specify the aspects to be taken into account, and the level to be achieved, in order for the assessment criteria to be deemed fulfilled. The following assessment criteria must be fulfilled for appointment to Professor:

  • A very good national and international standing as a researcher. The requirement for international experience shall be assessed with consideration to the character and traditions of the subject.
  • A very high level of teaching skills, including a very good ability to conduct, develop and lead teaching and other educational activities on different levels and using a variety of teaching methods.
  • A good ability to supervise doctoral students to achieve a PhD.
  • A good ability to collaborate with wider society and communicate his or her activities.
  • A good general ability to lead and develop activities.

Additional requirements

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • General knowledge on building techniques in cold climates.
  • Knowledge on energy simulation tools for buildings.
  • Ph.D. degree in a relevant subject.
  • Documented ability to attract external research funding.

Other qualifications

  • Knowledge on calculation of building’s climate impact during the whole life cycle.
  • Documented experience of collaboration with industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to the national and international research agenda through conferences, debates, etc.
  • Basic knowledge of Swedish or other nordic language.
  • Good written and oral communication skills which are required for the tasks described above. 

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research, first and second cycle education and innovation within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
