MAX IV is a Swedish national large-scale research laboratory hosted by Lund University. It provides scientists from Sweden as well as internationally, with state-of-the-art instrumentation for research in areas such as engineering, physics, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed it will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually, conducting ground-breaking experiments in materials and life sciences using the brilliant X-ray light. 

KITS Software Team 

Are you our new software developer that will boost research for the scientists? Apply your software development skills to help explore the full capabilities of Sweden's new flagship laboratory. You will have the chance to face new challenges of the synchrotron domain in a very diverse and interesting environment.  

The KITS-SW group provides MAX IV with a wide range of software solutions for the facility scientific endeavors. Among others we provide control system solutions following international standards in synchrotrons such as web-based user interfaces, distributed hardware control, scanning tools for running experiments, acquiring and saving data and metadata, etc. As a very important part of MAX IV, the functionality and the reliability of the control and acquisition system software is continuously developed to meet the research requirements. 

In our team you will meet open minded people from different perspectives. Being part the KITS group, you will be in close collaboration with scientists as well as network, system, software and hardware engineers and scientific software experts. We promote a DevOps style cross functional team and collaboration between all people. 

MAX IV is looking for a Computer or Physics Scientist who will…  

be involved in the software developments of the data acquisition and the experiment control framework from a variety of detectors and their integration into the experimental stations. You will join a trust-oriented and open team where continuous improvement and mentorship is part of our culture. As an experienced professional we expect you to bridge science and state of the art software development. 

You will be expected to participate in different international collaborations about control and data acquisition, as well as to contribute to international conferences. 
 
You will also be able to learn and to increase your skills, competence, and experience. 

Your main work tasks will be  

  • Developing software projects for scientific experimentation at MAX IV.  
  • Supporting the MAX IV staff in using the data acquisition and the experiment control framework 
  • Increasing the functionality and the reliability of the data acquisition, experiment control and visualization system to realize its scientific potential of the whole facility. 
  • Improving the “User eXperience” for troubleshooting and finding simple user-friendly solutions to complex problems.  
  • Participating to the team planning and resource estimation as well as improving the group infrastructure. 

To be successful in this role you need to have the following qualifications  

  • An advanced university degree. 
  • A professional experience with Python 3 programming. 
  • An understanding of measurement and data collection for experiments. 
  • An understanding of common Software Architecture: Functional, OOP, Reactive ... 
  • An understanding of Performance and Distribution of systems: TCP/IP, ZMQ, … 
  • Experience with Agile team environment and familiar with peer programming, review, unit tests, continuous integration, and continuous delivery. 
  • An open source spirit. 

Below are seen as merits 

  • Experience in Data Collection and Control System development. 
  • Experience in Tango and/or Sardana development. 
  • Scientific domain knowledge about a related discipline (e.g. spectroscopy, microscopy, particle accelerators...). 
  • The ability to work in a Linux operating system environment. 
  • Other Software programming languages: JavaScript, C, C++, Go, Rust …  
  • Software development for scientific environment. 
  • Web development: Microframework, HTTP, React…  
  • Showing evidence of an Open Source community collaboration. 
  • Working in an international research-oriented environment.

In addition to the above it is regarded as highly important to supply evidence that you are a team player and can demonstrate your communication and collaborative skills. You should also be committed to quality work and able to understand requirements for scientific related developments.
