Description of the workplace

The position as research engineer is placed within the Active and Healthy Ageing Research Group. The duties also include work for researchers in the Applied Gerontology Research Group. The research groups share the same premises and are linked to the interdisciplinary Centre for Ageing and Supportive Environments (CASE) and also collaborate with researchers active in the Lund University Population Research Platform (LUPOP). CASE engages senior and early-career researchers who represent various disciplines and professions, such as epidemiology, gerontology, occupational therapy, public health, psychology and economics, at four of the University’s faculties. LUPOP is an overall infrastructure at Lund University for population investigations based on data from private individuals.

Duties and responsibilities

You will be involved in a context that engages epidemiologists, gerontologists, occupational therapists and other health scientists, psychologists etc. in extensive national and international contexts. This may involve business travel.

You will have responsibility for the advanced processing of data in large national register databases and a number of cohort studies that are stored and analysed within LUSEC (a secure platform for data processing at the Faculty of Medicine).

Specific areas of responsibility:

• Plan, administer, implement and document linking between large databases, including national register data and data from cohort studies.
• Draw up data processing plans and other policy documents.
• Plan, implement and document quality control and data cleaning of large databases, including national register data and data from cohort studies.
• Identify and select relevant variables in different classification systems, such as ICD diagnosis codes, ATC drug codes, intervention codes and care measure codes.
• Provide advice and practical support regarding data processing to researchers and other project staff.
• Contribute to data processing and preparation of statistical analyses in cooperation with different constellations of researchers prior to publication of research results. Depending on the employee’s interest and motivation, independent statistical and epidemiological analyses of data may be included.
• Plan, administer, implement and document extraction of data to researchers who have been granted access to research data, both internally and externally.
• Contribute to relevant activities in the CASE and LUPOP research groups. The position may involve other duties.  

Qualifications

The person we are looking for has an academic education at Master’s level in a subject area relevant to the position, preferably epidemiology, statistics, econometrics, computer science or other education or experience the employer deems to have corresponding value.

The requirements for the position are:

• You will have very good computer skills, including experience of working in Microsoft Office.
• You will have documented experience of independent work on data processing mainly in research or investigation activities, or in the form of independent advanced work in first or second cycle academic education.
• Documented experience of working with statistics programs such as STATA, R, SAS or equivalent.
• Documented experience of working with large volumes of data including linking of register data.
• You will have a good ability to set up efficient and secure procedures for data processing and research administration.
• Very good ability to communicate correctly in English, orally and in writing, is a requirement.
• Meticulousness is a requirement, as is a high degree of independence and reliability.

The work involves many social contacts, which is why it is important to be very service-minded and have the ability to communicate in a sensitive and agile way. It is important that you place great importance on providing the best possible service to the staff members and partners concerned. You must have the ability to efficiently and independently prioritise various work assignments in a work situation in which the workload often varies significantly over time. Furthermore, you must be thorough, have a marked organisational ability and good collaboration skills. Great importance is placed on personal suitability.

Additional qualifications for the position are:

• Experience of working with the statistics program SPSS
• Good knowledge of Swedish national register data
• Experience of programming, for example with SQL or other programming languages
• Experience of work in interdisciplinary research activities

Further information

This is a fixed-term position, 50-75% of full-time working hours, with a starting date of 1 May 2022 or according to agreement, for a period not to extend beyond 31 December 2023.
