The Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts is one of eight faculties within Lund University and includes Malmö Art Academy, Malmö Academy of Music and Malmö Theatre Academy, also Inter Arts Center and Choral Centre South. The Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts offers Bachelor and Master programs in visual art, music and drama, and various courses of different extent. The Faculty also runs third cycle (postgraduate) studies in artistic research and music education.

Malmö Art Academy has approximately 75 students and offers first, second, and third cycle education in fine arts. It is a creative and stimulating educational environment with highly set artistic and educational goals and a very good standing in the art world. Malmö Art Academy is a leading institution in the field of artistic research, and is now enhancing its community by opening up a position for a Postdoctoral Fellow in Visual Arts.

Work duties

A postdoctoral position is a fixed-term career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career and shall give the applicant an opportunity to develop their independence as a researcher as well as create conditions to gain further credentials as a researcher.

The main duty of a postdoctoral position is to conduct research. This postdoctoral position involves research within the field of visual arts, and in particular Malmö Art Academy seeks a fellow whose research will contribute to excellence in the field of nuclear physics and/or astronomy, which is an area of expertise currently evolving within Lund University.

The multidisciplinary research facility the European Spallation Source (ESS), a trans-European initiative to create the world’s most powerful pulsed neutron source for use in a wide variety research fields, is currently under construction and is expected to open in 2023. Malmö Art Academy seeks a visual artist who will link artistic research to the field of nuclear physics and/or astronomy.

The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning. Teaching may also be included in the position, but will comprise no more than 20 percent of working hours.

 

Qualification requirements

The applicant must have a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position.

Proof that this qualification requirement has been met must be submitted when the decision of employment is made, at the latest.

In addition to artistic research at a prominent level, the applicant must have a proven track-record of artistic practice at the international level.

The position requires very good oral and written proficiency in English.


Assessment criteria

Postdoctoral appointments are subject to the following assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high-quality research and artistic practice
  • Teaching ability

The selection process will prioritise applicants who have completed their PhDs within the last three years. Please note that this is an assessment criterion, not a requirement.

Particular emphasis will be placed on the applicant’s artistic ability. Additionally, the assessment of the applicant is based on the qualifications profile established for the position, according to the following assessment criteria:

  • Quality of artistic works and its relation to the research project’s focus and/or research methods
  • Credentials that prove the applicant’s ability to carry out complex artistic and/or research tasks in the field of visual arts
  • Credentials that prove the applicant’s ability to work well in interdisciplinary collaborations or other relevant collaborations

Additional beneficial assessment criteria:

  • Ability to show how the applicant perceives the relationship between nuclear physics and/or astronomy and their own artistic work, for example, by providing samples of artistic works that include this relationship


Terms of employment

This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of at least two years and at most three years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the recently concluded agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor 2022-02-01” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a postdoctoral fellow 2022-02-01”).

The first day of employment is May 1, 2022, or according to agreement.
