Lund University, Department of Astronomy and Theoretical Physics

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

Introduction
The position is placed at the Department of Astronomy and Theoretical Physics in a group that is led by Sofia Feltzing and researches stellar populations.

Through a generous grant from the KAW foundation the department participates in 4MOST (www.4most.eu) and the group participates in WEAVE. Both are massively multiplex spectroscopic surveys of the Milky Way.  Through a collaboration with Stockholm and Uppsala universities Lund participates in the ELT instrument MOSAIC.

Within the position the employee is offered up to three weeks of pedagogical training. The employee is also encouraged to participate in the career programs offered by the university to postdoctoral fellows. Description of work
The main tasks will be research in the area of Galactic Archeaology and work on the development of data reduction and analysis systems for MOSAIC, one of the instruments for ESO’s ELT. The research focus should be Galactic Archeaology, i.e. the study of the Milky Way as a galaxy with the help large spectroscopic and photometric surveys and/or the modelling of galaxy formation. The work within the Swedish contribution to MOSAIC is foreseen to be related to the development of functional prototypes for the data reduction system for MOSAIC.

The employee will spend about 1/3 of their time on the work for MOSAIC. This means working closely with researchers in Stockholm and Upsala. The exact format for the collaboration will be set up in dialog with the employee but it is to be expected that there will be some travel involved.

The employee is expected to promote their own research results as well as those from the group via publication of scientific papers, give talks at international conferences and via visiting other research institutes and give seminars. This will mean some travel. There is a budget available for this but the employee is also expected to apply for travel funds from external bodies, such as learned societies and research councils.

The employee will be expected to organize and lead a monthly meeting where local researchers with an interested in the two ELT instrument ANDES and MOSAIC meet.

If the employee is interested there is the possibility to participate in teaching at bachelor and/or master level, e.g. by giving guest lectures. The employee will also have the possibility to offer exam projects for bachelor and master students.

Eligibility
Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed primarily no more than three years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Assessment critera
Postdoctoral fellow positions are research-focused appointments intended to form early stages of a science career. The assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

Qualifications
The employee should hold a PhD in astrophysics with applications of relevance for the position. The employee must not hold a PhD degree when the application is sent in, but the degree must be awarded no later than the starting date of the position.

The employee should be specialized in theory/modelling or observations alternatively have a stronger connection to the development of spectroscopic instruments and associated software with the goal of studying the Milky Way and other galaxies with the aim to understand how galaxies form and evolve.

Merits
It is a merit to have experience of large spectroscopic surveys of stars in the Milky Way or in other galaxies.
It is a merit to have worked with comparative studies of simulations of galaxy formation and observations of the Milky Way.
Knowledge of programming in C or Python is a merit.
It is a merit to have participated in the development of software to reduce and analyze stellar spectra.

Terms of employment
This is a full-time, fixed-term employment with a maximum three years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”) between Lund University, SACO-S and OFR/S, dated February 1, 2022.

Other information
Interviews will be conducted via video or phone conference. The interviews will be done as soon as possible after the closing of the application. At the interviews researchers from the groups in Stockholm and/or Uppsala will participate.
