Description of the workplace
The Genetic and Molecular Epidemiology (GAME) unit is led by Dr Giuseppe ‘Nick’ Giordano, an Associate Professor and Researcher, based at Lund University Diabetes Centre (LUDC), Malmö. Work undertaken at GAME is focused predominantly on characterizing the joint effects of lifestyle and genomic variation in obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. At the forefront of the Unit’s agenda is to help develop personalized preventive and therapeutic interventions (precision medicine).

Work duties
We are seeking postdoctoral researcher to join the EU-funded project called SOPHIA (Stratification of Obesity Phenotypes to Optimize Future Obesity Therapy), as part of the Innovative Medicine Initiative (IMI). For this position, we are looking for an individual to join us in investigating the relationship between obesity and type 1 diabetes (T1D). You will be working as part of a dynamic, international team consisting of clinicians, biologists, and data scientists from both academic settings and the pharmaceutical sector. The postdoctoral researcher will use their skills in computational biology, bioinformatics and/or biostatistics to create evidence from observational and clinical trial data sources, as well as to support the project stakeholders. The candidate will participate in meetings within the SOPHIA-T1D work packages and also liaise with researchers in other SOPHIA work packages (who are investigating related topics, such as obesity and type 2 diabetes). The SOPHIA-T1D team is distributed across multiple countries; interactions with colleagues will be facilitated by frequent virtual and in-person meetings, where feasible. 

Qualification requirements 
Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international
degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

 Essential qualifications:

  • Hold a PhD in a statistics-focused health discipline, such as bioinformatics, computational biology, biostatistics, or similar.

  • Expertise in statistics/biostatistics, data science, and/or machine learning.

  • Proficiency in programming in R and/or Python.

  • Be fluent in English (both written and spoken)

  • Enthusiasm for collaboration will be paid on personal suitability for the position.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English are also essential, as the postdoctoral researcher will give presentations and author documents for both scientific and lay audiences. 

Preferred qualifications:

  • Expertise in epidemiology.

  • Expertise in obesity and/or T1D.

  • Experience working with medical data.

  • Knowledge of clinical trials.

Terms of employment
This is a full-time employment limited to 2 years with preliminary start date 2022-05-16. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral researcher”) between SACO-S, OFR/S and SEKO, dated November 19, 2021.
