Description of the projects

The Division of Mathematics LTH and Numerical analysis is seeking candidates for the post-doctoral projects below. Please state in the application which project(s) you are interested in.

P1. PDEs in fluid dynamics with focus on modeling and analysis of non-Newtonian thin-film equations
Non-Newtonian thin fluids appear in many industrial and biomedical applications. The core of the project relies on mathematical modeling via lubrication approximation and qualitative analysis of non-Newtonian thin-film equations, and it involves existence of strong and global weak solutions, long-time behavior, contact angle theory, and traveling front solutions.

P2. Low rank/cardinality approximation

To approximate one matrix with another of lower rank is a basic technique that is used in many contexts, such as compression, dimension reduction, machine learning and computer vision. The mathematical formulations often lead to large scale optimization problems. The goal is to develop theory and algorithms for solving these effectively and reliably. The research will therefore address both theoretically challenging problems as well as algorithmic implementation with applications in 3D reconstruction and visualization among others.

P3. Dynamics of coupled oscillator networks
Synchronization dynamics plays an important role in coupled oscillator networks in biology and technology. This project aims at advancing the theory of complex networks of coupled oscillators (and neurons), based on dynamical systems theory, graph theory, and dimensional reduction methods. Research will include the dynamics of the underlying graph and its interaction with oscillator nodes. Such co-evolutionary dynamics plays an important role in neural plasticity/learning in the brain, and theoretical findings promise potential applications in neuro-science, biomedicine, and the theory of AI.  For further info see http://eam.webhop.net/.

Subject description

The projects have the following focus:

P1) partial differential equations

P2) mathematical optimization

P3) dynamical systems theory

Work duties

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning. The purpose of the position is to develop the independence as a researcher and to create the opportunity of further development.

Detailed description of the work duties:

  • Research within the one of the projects.
  • Teaching in the first, second and third cycles of studies.
  • Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students.
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above.

Qualification requirements

Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position. The certificate proving the qualification requirement is met, must be received before the employment decision is made. Priority will be given to candidates who have graduated no more than three years ago before the last day for application. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements for all projects:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • The applicant shall have publications in subject relevant journals or conferences.

Additional requirements for the individual projects:

P1) A strong background in PDEs including functional analysis, fluid dynamics and mathematical modelling.

P2) Experience with mathematical optimization, convex analysis and matrix theory. Programing experience, especially in MATLAB.

P3) Expertise in dynamical systems theory (e.g., nonlinear dynamics, complex dynamics/analysis, network/graph theory, and/or statistical physics/mathematical physics). Experience in programming.

Assessment criteria

This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills.

Other qualifications for all projects:

Documented independence and leadership within research projects.

Other qualifications for the individual projects:

P1) Experience with semigroup theory, Galerkin approximations, energy methods and gradient flows.

P2) Experience with 3D reconstruction and factorization.

Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Further information

This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of two years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”).
