Basis of assessment

Admittance of a doctoral student is based on an assessment of the candidate’s ability to benefit from third-cycle studies, see the general syllabus for third-cycle studies, available at www.lusem.lu.se/study/phd.

The applicant’s ability to benefit from third-cycle studies and research will primarily be assessed on the basis of academic results from the first and second cycle.

  • Quality and content of previous written work, such as a Master’s thesis.
  • Ability to participate actively in the Department’s research environment.
  • Ability to perform independent scientific work.
  • Basic statistical and econometric knowledge.
  • Experience or interest in working with large individual-level databases.
  • Proficiency in written and oral communication.
  • Relevant educational background, for example in sociology, demography or economics.
  • Other relevant experiences for third-cycle education, such as work experience.

We are interested in applicants with an interest in the mechanisms determining immigrant integration, in addition to strong skills in the management and analysis of longitudinal individual level data.

Project

The doctoral student will work within the research project "Migration policy, migrant selection and labor market outcomes in Sweden and Denmark, 1986-2017". The project is motivated by the significant immigration that has characterized countries in Western Europe in recent decades, in recent years increasingly dominated by refugee and family reunification migration. While a large literature has illustrated factors that are particularly important for the individual's socio-economic integration, the understanding of how integration is affected by migration policy and selection is lacking. Within the project, individual register data for the total population in Sweden and Denmark between 1986-2017 will be used, in combination with aggregated information on policy changes over time, in order to contribute to the understanding of a topic of great scientific and social importance. The study context is optimal in several respects. Both countries have experienced significant immigration at the same time as they have adopted different migration policies during the period. Another advantage can be traced to Sweden's and Denmark's geographical proximity and deep institutional, socio-economic and cultural similarities, something that enables the effects of policy changes to be more easily identified.
