Description of the workplace
The main supervisor will be Malin Inghammar, Associate professor (docent), Department of Clinical Sciences Lund, and co-supervisor Anton Nilsson, Associate professor (docent). The doctoral student will be situated at and work in close collaboration with the research group EPI@Lund, led by Professor Jonas Björk. Within EPI@Lund PhD students and senior researchers address different research questions associated with major societal issues by combining modern epidemiological methodology with detailed population data on individual level. Research on applied causal inference is also a theme. The research is multi-disciplinary and a Research Collaboration Initiative, stretching over multiple research areas for Covid-19 vaccine uptake, effect and safety and improvement of pandemic preparedness has recently been established with substantial external funding from e.g. Swedish Research Council (VR) and
Sweden’s Innovation Agency (Vinnova).

Project plan and work tasks
The doctoral project is a project in epidemiological methods / applied medical statistics in the field of infectious diseases. The overall aim of the project is to investigate socioeconomic and demographic gradients in the risk of severe infectious diseases through epidemiological studies, with a special focus on sepsis and covid-19, to study direct and indirect effects and long-term effects after infectious diseases, and to study how observational data and registry data can be used to estimate causal effects in general. The project will consist of methodological parts that aims to explore statistical and epidemiological methodological issues and applied parts that aim to study long term effects more specifically, through statistical analyses of individual level data from quality registries, population- and health registries.

The doctoral student will participate in the educational program for PhD students at the Faculty of
Medicine and is expected to present research findings at seminars, national and international meetings.

Qualifications
The requirements for the position are:
- MSc in Epidemiology, Statistics, Health Economy, Public Health or other of relevance.
- Excellent communication skills in English (oral and written)
- Solid knowledge of at least one statistical package such as Stata or R.
- Good analytical ability.
- The ability to work in a structured way.
- Ability to cooperate

Additional qualifications for the position are:
- Experience from quantitative data management and statistical analysis.
- Knowledge and experience of medical, public health or epidemiological research issues.
- Previous experience of working with Swedish or Nordic registry infrastructure and registry data.

Other
The employment is limited in time for four years according to HF Chapter 5, Section 7 with appointment the 1st of May or as soon as possible.

Eligibility
Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who- have completed a second-cycle degree- have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or- have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.
