The Faculty of Science conducts research and education within Biology, Astronomy, Physics, Geosciences, Chemistry, Mathematics and Environmental Sciences. The Faculty is organized into nine departments, gathered in the northern campus area. The Faculty has approximately 1500 students, 330 PhD students and 700 employees.

 

ICOS (Integrated Carbon Observation System, https://www.icos-ri.eu) is a European research infrastructure providing scientific data on carbon cycle and greenhouse gas budget. ICOS Carbon Portal (https://www.icos-cp.eu) is the data centre of ICOS, responsible for designing and building web services for archival and dissemination of these data, including upload, storage, long-term preservation, search, visualization, and download. The Carbon Portal is hosted by Lund University by the Department of Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science (http://www.nateko.lu.se/).

Work description
ICOS Carbon Portal at Lund University is looking for a researcher in the framework of EU Horizon projects like ATMO ACCESS, ICOS Cities, EOSC Future and ENVRIFAIR, to make all observational data and metadata collected by the ICOS research infrastructure accessible and FAIR to the users, including the research community, policymakers, other environmental data users, and students.

Detailed description of the work duties, such as:

  • Improve and expand existing data products
  • Develop new data products and services hosted at the Carbon Portal
  • Update and create user documentation for data products and services
  • Create, co-develop and present use cases and educational material to be used in webinars, online learning and workshops
  • Promote ICOS data through workshops and presentations
  • Explore and extend outreach and collaboration opportunities with other Research Infrastructures in Europe and globally
  • Collaborate in scientific peer reviewed international publications

 

You will be part of the elaborated products team at Carbon Portal and will work with the scientific community and the Carbon Portal development team developing FAIR data services. You will gather the requirements and define specifications for the products and interfaces (API’s) to other (global) portals and services, considering the developing international standards. You will also co-develop the interface elements and demonstration notebooks together with the CP elaborated data team.

 

Qualification requirements
Applicants must have:

A PhD or equivalent training in a relevant field (computer science, engineering, data science, environmental sciences) with interest and experience in open data science, visualisation, teaching and outreach. The position requires excellent programming skills and experience in at least Python and using Jupyter Notebooks. Proven experience in scientific data visualisation is required and experience in teaching and outreach programs is an advantage. The function requires an in-depth knowledge and experience with FAIR data and domain knowledge on at least one of the scientific domains of ICOS, i.e. ecosystem, atmosphere and/or ocean. Proficient use of English is required.

 

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
