Subject description

The proposed research work consists in determining the temperature field of two-phase flow systems by means of advanced imaging and laser-based diagnostic techniques. Two types of flows will be investigated:

  1. The combustion of metal particles
  2. The evaporation of heated droplets from atomizing sprays

Work duties

In this research work the temperature field of two-phase flow systems will be investigated including the combustion of metal particles and the evaporation of heated droplets from atomizing sprays. For the measurement of liquid temperature in atomizing sprays, a method that combines two-color LIF thermometry together with Structured Laser Illumination Planar Imaging (SLIPI) will be used. This work will focus on deducing the precision and accuracy of the 2D temperature measurements and applying the
approach for spray drying applications. For the combusting metal particles, various approaches involving the detection of spectral bands of the black body radiation will be tested and applied using double-frame sCMOS and/or high-speed cameras. For the case of highly seeded metal particles, the SLIPI technique will also be tested and applied to
analyze the particle flow. Both macroscopic imaging (viewed areas in the order of ~5 cm) and microscopic imaging (viewed areas in the order of ~5 mm) will be used during this project.

Detailed description of the work duties:

  • Research within the subject area
  • Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students
  • Collaboration with industry and wider society
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above

Qualification requirements

Applicants must have:

  • A PhD within the subject of the position.
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Extensive knowledge on temperature measurements of particles/droplets using laser based diagnostics.
  • Ability to independently design and carry out experimental research projects related to two-phase flow systems.
  • A broad competence profile and knowledge in heat transfer and fluid mechanics is important for this project.
  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications

  • Extensive experience on temperature measurements involving temperature sensitive dyes.
  • Extensive experience on laser diagnostic techniques.
  • Experience in laboratory work related to two-phase flows.
  • Strong skills in programming and image analysis.
  • Journal publications in the field.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
