Workplace description/subject area

Historical Archaeology covers the Late Iron Age, through the Viking era, the Middle Ages and the early modern period all the way up to the present day. The subject is methodologically focused on the relationship between material culture, images and writing, and includes comparisons with other archaeologies around the world that also operate at the intersection between object, text and image. This allows for an integrated global perspective in our research. Historical Archaeology in Lund is primarily focused on the Nordic countries, but attention also turns outwards in comparisons with the rest of Europe, the Muslim world and other global contexts. Now we want to strengthen the subject with a senior lecturer focused on research and teaching about the early modern and modern period.

Work duties

The position involves teaching and research in the field of Historical Archaeology. The successful candidate is expected to be able to teach in the first and second-cycles across the entire chronological spectrum, from the Late Iron Age to the modern era, but with a particular focus on the early modern and modern periods. Teaching in the Archaeology of Buildings may also be required. Applying for external grants and participating in the administrative work of the department is seen as a natural future part of the work.

Teaching includes course responsibility and course administration as well as the supervision of theses. Administrative tasks may also be included. The duties also include actively applying for external research funding, as well as following developments in their own subject area and in society in general that are relevant to teaching at the University.

Those qualified for appointment as a senior lecturer must have:

  • a PhD or equivalent research expertise or other professional expertise of relevance to the subject matter and the duties of the position
  • demonstrated teaching expertise
  • completed training in teaching and learning in higher education of at least five weeks or equivalent knowledge that has been acquired in another way.

The ability to be able to teach in Swedish within two years, and in English from day one, is a requirement.

The general assessment criteria are: the degree of expertise in research, teaching, administration and other areas of significance with reference to the subject area and work duties of the position, as well as other personal abilities of significance for successfully carrying out these duties.

The specific assessment criteria are:

  • good national and international standing as a researcher
  • good teaching ability, including a good ability to conduct, develop and lead educational activities on different levels and using a variety of teaching methods.
  • ability to participate in the supervision of doctoral students undertaking PhD studies.
  • ability to collaborate with wider society and communicate their activities, as well as the ability to lead and develop those activities.

Specific qualifications of additional merit:

  •  PhD in Historical Archaeology (or equivalent subject)
  • Documented experience of research and teaching about the early modern and modern periods from an archaeological perspective
  • Documented experience of the Archaeology of Buildings
  • Documented experience of supervising first and second-cycle theses
  • Documented experience of external engagement, especially with cultural heritage/museum partners

In the assessment, equal consideration is given to teaching expertise and research expertise.
