Description of the workplace

The Division of Mathematical Physics is a joint unit between the natural science faculty and the technical faculty (LTH) and is part of the physics department. The research at the division is mainly in the area of many-body quantum physics which includes nuclear structure theory, nanophysics, quantum information, atomic theory and materials modelling, with many collaborations both internationally and within Lund university. The research group where the applicant will work is led by prof. S.M. Reimann and conducts research in the field of ultra-cold atomic quantum gases and many-particle quantum physics.

We offer

Lund University is a public authority which means that employees get particular benefits, generous annual leave and an advantageous occupational pension scheme. Read more on the University website about being a Lund University employee Work at Lund University.

Work duties

The subject for the position is theoretical quantum physics with special focus on many-body systems such as trapped ultra-cold atoms, self-bound quantum droplets and supersolidity in these types of systems. Topically the majority of work will be the development of methods for approximate descriptions of bosonic quantum droplets and dipolar atom systems and their quantum-mechanical properties.

Work tasks include

  • Research within the research area. Forming and extending theoretical and numerical models for the simulation of few- and many-body quantum systems, with focus on the quantum dynamics of bosonic quantum systems and dipolar supersolids.
  • Teaching at the research level
  • Possibility for pedagogical training at the university level
  • Help with the supervision of exam works and PhD students in the group
  • Work with the attraction of external research funding
  • Interaction with industry and society
  • Administrative tasks coupled to the work tasks described above.

Qualifications

Required qualifications for the position are:

  • A PhD or equivalent research qualification within the subject of the position.
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Very good knowledge in theoretical quantum physics and condensed matter theory in general, as well as experience in the theoretical modelling of quantum mechanical few- and many-body quantum systems.
  • Experience in the development and application of typical quantum many-body methods
  • Independence in work and good collaborative skills

Additional qualifications for the position are:

  • Experience with numerical simulations of ultra-cold atomic quantum gases, bosonic multicomponent quantum gases and dipolar quantum gases including supersolidity.
  • Experience in optimization of time-consuming numerical work
  • Experience in the implementation of effective algorithms to handle various aspects of quantum-mechanical many-particle problems
  • Some prior experience in the supervision of exam work students and diploma students

Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Further information

Fixed term employment for 2 years, 100%. Starting date of July 1, 2022 or after individual agreement.

How to apply

Applications are to be submitted via the University’s recruitment system. The application should include a CV and a personal letter justifying your interest in the position and how it matches your qualifications. The application should also include a degree certificate or equivalent and any other document to which you would like to draw attention (copies of grade transcripts, details of referees, letters of recommendation, etc.)”.
