European studies at SOL is an interdisciplinary research and education environment that includes cultural scientists, historians, political scientists and literary and linguistic researchers. The main field European studies at SOL includes two programmes: the Bachelor’s programme in European studies with a focus on the humanities, as well as the two-year, international Master of Art’s programme in European studies, taught in English. In autumn 2022 we will start a new two-year Master’s programme in East and Central European studies in collaboration with Copenhagen University. All our programmes are interdisciplinary in nature and rooted in the humanities. In terms of research, we have established a leading profile within memory studies, cultural politics and political communications.
In order to strengthen our research environment and our teaching team, we are looking for an accomplished researcher and lecturer with a genuine interest in working across disciplinary boundaries, developing new ideas in research and education, and a willingness to develop their expertise in new areas. The position includes research, teaching and supervision on both Bachelor’s and Master’s levels. The research aspect also includes applying for external research grants. Given the diversity of our team, we attach great importance to the new lecturer’s collaborative and organisational skills.
The position of associate senior lecturer includes research (at least 50%) and teaching (maximum 50%) Focus is on offering career-advancing opportunities in research, and a mentor will be made available as support for the associate senior lecturer. The associate senior lecturer in European studies will help develop research in one of the specialisations within the department. Development of teaching and teaching methods is expected primarily to take place within the framework of the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in European studies.
The position will provide opportunities for career advancement within teaching and research. Emphasis will be placed on research advancement first and foremost. An opportunity for five weeks’ training in teaching and learning in higher education will be offered in connection with the appointment.
A person qualified for appointment as an associate senior lecturer is a person who has been awarded a PhD or has the corresponding research expertise. Primary consideration should be given to a person who has been awarded a PhD or achieved the equivalent expertise within five years of the deadline for application for employment as an associate senior lecturer. However, a person who has been awarded a PhD or achieved the equivalent expertise at an earlier date may also be considered if there are exceptional circumstances. Exceptional circumstances are sick leave, parental leave or other similar circumstances.
Further requirements for appointment are:
A completed PhD within the humanities or social sciences. The ability to teach in English from the first day of employment is a requirement. It is also expected that after two years of employment the candidate will have acquired skills in the Swedish language sufficient to be able to teach in Swedish.
The assessment will also focus on the applicant’s ability to achieve sufficient qualifications for promotion to senior lecturer within the time frame of the associate senior lecturer position.
Equal attention will be given to the applicants’ teaching and research expertise.

The Academic Appointments Board normally selects a shortlist of applicants. This selection can be done in one or several steps and if needed with the help of external experts. An associate senior lecturer can apply during their period of employment to be promoted to an indefinite-term position as senior lecturer if she or he is qualified for such a position and is also considered suitable when assessed in line with the qualification requirements and assessment criteria below. Applications can only be made once and should be submitted to the Joint Faculties of Humanities and Theology six months before the position ends at the latest.

For promotion, the applicant must be qualified to the extent that they meet the requirements for appointment as an associate professor in accordance with the guidelines of the Joint Faculties of Humanities and Theology and they must also have applied for and been awarded external research funding in competition.
