Work duties
We are recruiting a laboratory assistant to support the research within the HybridExpress project aimed at examining the role of gene expression in how novel adaptation can arise from hybridization. Mediterranean island populations of the hybrid Italian sparrow and its parent species will be the study system.

The main duties will consist of:

1) Field work with birds in the Mediterranean for several weeks during the reproductive season of the Italian sparrows, adjusted to fit the breeding times. The work will include dissections for RNA sampling.

2) Being responsible for the care of captive breeding populations of sparrows at the Ecological Field Station Stensoffa, with some support of a PhD-student.

3) Management of the molecular lab used by the group, including performing RNA extractions.

4) General research support. The general research support will consist in e.g. support with organisation of meetings, handling applications for ethical permits, organising and backing up data, handling economy, and independently searching for information and solving practical tasks.

There is a potential for the laboratory assistant to take part in research projects depending on the workload with other tasks and interest.

Qualifications
We are looking for an independent person who enjoys organising and solving practical problems. While the candidate does not need to know all the work duties listed at outset, a willingness to learn and perform all of these is required.

We are looking for a candidate with a MSc in biology, preferably with a focus on evolutionary and/or genetic aspects. The candidate can possibly also have a specialisation, e.g. a PhD in biology. Some experience with molecular lab work is required, with experience in RNA-extractions being especially meriting. The candidate has to have excellent English skills. A driver’s license valid in Sweden and Europe for the entire duration of the project is required.

We are looking for someone that will enjoy working with support, being collaborative and service minded. A willingness and ability to independently find out how administrative tasks are solved through searching for information and contacting relevant instances is a key qualification.

Other merits
Experience of field work with birds and with dissections are meriting. If candidates are equally well suited, knowledge of Swedish is meriting.

We will place great emphasis on personal suitability. Consideration will also be given to i.e. good collaborative skills and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen the work within both the project and wider lab group, as well as contribute to its future development.
