Description of the workplace 
LUNARC is a center at Lund university providing high-performance computing (HPC), visualization and storage services. LUNARC collaborates with research communities offering expertise and courses in scientific computing, visualization, and the use of high-performance computing resources. LUNARC currently operates compute and visualization resources with associated storage resources. To increase the usability of these resources, an interactive on-demand HPC service (remote desktop) with hardware-accelerated graphics has been developed. This service can provide custom environments for specific research requirements within the communities.

LUNARC employees have expertise in many areas, enabling us to support our scientific users in many different ways from hardware, storage, and development projects. We collaborate with several research communities such as MAX IV, Bioinformatics, etc. If you are passionate about creating leading-edge HPC solutions for demanding scientific needs, LUNARC is the place to be!

LUNARC currently has 12 employees consisting of system engineers, application experts, and developers. LUNARC is a division under Construction Sciences at LTH but is a shared LU resource.
Based on our needs to expand the organization, LUNARC will, in 2022, relocate our office to newly renovated premises, including a hardware/visualisation lab, comfortable meeting and lounge areas, and a kitchen with all amenities.

Work duties 
Are you passionate about creating new creative solutions for our users in the fields of high-performance computing (HPC), visualization and storage? Is Linux administration and development of Linux-based services something you are passionate about? If you like working together as a team to meet interesting questions, this position could be something for you.

We need to expand our team and are looking for a technically and socially skilled, highly motivated team member for our IT infrastructure group to work with us mainly regarding the high-performance aspects of our HPC infrastructure.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to engage in a wide range of advanced computing tasks at LUNARC. This includes high-performance computing, visualization, storage, and networking. The successful candidate is expected to actively contribute to future development and be able to follow and analyze the trends and new developments in compute visualization and storage.

The tasks include basic system administration, i.e.:

  • hardware support of Linux-based computing resources for LUNARC.
  • maintenance of system software.
  • monitoring of hardware and various services.
  • user support including compiling and installing scientific software.

The computer systems are based on the latest hardware and software and the position therefore also means opportunities to try and become acquainted with the latest technologies in the field of computers. This can be:

  • development and commissioning of new systems.
  • different types of development projects in user support, system management, and monitoring.
  • attend conferences within HPC and related areas.

Qualifications  
We are looking for candidates who have excellent knowledge in Linux system administration and are passionate about creating new and creative solutions for our large user base. You should also be a good team player with great initiative, responsibility, and commitment. 

Required qualifications for the position are:

  • experience with operating large-scale computer infrastructures.
  • solid understanding of the Linux operating system.
  • good scripting skills (Python, Bash).
  • excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • motivated and driven with an ability to keep timelines.
  • fluent in English in both speech and writing.
  • experience in working in a team with a common goal.

Additional qualifications for the position are experience of:

  • installing and maintaining scientific software (C++, Fortran, MATLAB, Python, R)
  • montainer technology (Docker, Singularity) and container orchestration (OpenStack, Kubernetes)
  • managing job queueing systems (e.g., SLURM)
  • managing HPC systems
  • server performance tuning
  • Spectrum Scale (GPFS)
  • Infiniband fabric
  • Swedish in speech and writing

Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen the expertise and knowledge at the department.
