Subject description
Semiconductor nanostructures form the base for developing novel applications in electronics, optoelectronics, and quantum information technology. Here, a basic understanding of the relation between structure and function down to the atomic scale is crucial for successful future device development, especially regarding surfaces and interfaces.
Our research group has recently started to form and characterize novel nanostructures which are induced by the deposition of bismuth atoms on the surface of III-V semiconductors and nanowires. Intense work is going on using both scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy as well as synchrotron-based characterization methods such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and angle-resolved XPS (ARPES).

Work duties
The succesful candidate is supposed to perform research within the subject area. More specifically, the work duties include the following projects:

Analysis of XPS- and ARPES-results from bismuth deposition on GaAs Planning, performing, and analysing STM and STS experiments on GaAs substrates and nanowires upon bismuth deposition Developing surface models that take into account both STM results and calculations based on density functional theory.

Work duties can furthermore include supervision of degree projects and doctoral students as well as collaboration with the wider society.

Qualification requirements
Applicants must have:

  • A PhD or equivalent research qualification within the subject of the position.
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Extensive and solid experience in performing experiments in ultrahigh vacuum.
  • Extensive and solid experience with STM/STS.
  • Extensive and solid experience with XPS or ARPES.
  • Practical experience with research experiments at synchrotron facilities.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications
Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject and on previous experience that helps to perform the described work duties within the short duration of the project.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
Basic Swedish skills will be of advantage.
