Faculty of Engineering, LTH, Department of Design Sciences

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

Description of the workplace
The postdoctoral position is placed at the Division of Ergonomics and Aerosol Technology at LTH, Faculty of Engineering at Lund University. However, 50% of the work is located at the Humanities Lab of Lund University.

The Humanities Lab is an interdisciplinary department for research technology and training at the Joint Faculties of Humanities and Theology. The lab hosts technology (e.g. motion capture, 3D-scanning, immersive VR ± eye-tracking), methodological know-how, data management expertise, and a wide range of research projects. The Lab specializes in 3D data acquisition.

The XR research group at the Faculty of Engineering explores the interaction between humans and Virtual/Augmented Reality (VR/AR) technology. The research group hosts LTH’s VR laboratory, a meeting point for visualization and new interaction technologies.

Both the Humanities Lab and the XR research group participate in InfraVis, a Swedish national infrastructure that pulls together state-of-the-art visualization competence from nine Swedish partner universities to provide advanced visualization services on research data from any scientific domain.

Subject description
The acquisition, analysis and visualization of 3D data has become an indispensable tool for many research disciplines e.g. archaeology, biology and astrophysics. In combination with immersive technology (e.g. VR and AR) such an approach hugely enhances researchers’ ability to understand, explain and improve the human condition. Research on this type of methodology requires a multi-disciplinary approach that combines knowledge, tools and methodology from e.g. computer science, interaction design and cognitive science.

Work duties
The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning. The purpose of the position is to develop the independence as a researcher and to create the opportunity of further development.

The work duties include:

  • You will be responsible for the Humanities Lab’s 3D equipment (maintenance, upgrading, etc.) and data quality control.
  • You will develop the Humanities Lab’s technology and methods in collaboration with researchers from different fields and work with post-processing of collected data for evaluations and tests.
  • You will be a contact person for the Humanities Lab’s users, i.e. help them select the right technical systems/setups based on their needs, be accessible for problem solving, inform users about updates, etc. in the Humanities Lab.
  • You will perform research on Virtual Reality-based data visualisation.
  • You will develop the technology and methods of LTH’s Virtual Reality laboratory.
  • You will be active in the national infrastructure InfraVis, which means work with support and development in the visualization of scientific data in collaboration with research groups from Swedish universities.
