Description of the workplace 

Biotechnology is an area of central significance for the transition to a sustainable society. In this research discipline, microorganisms or their components are developed and utilized using environmentally sustainable methods to achieve technical products and services. The researcher position is placed at the Department of Chemistry, Division of Biotechnology. Research in the division involves both fundamental and applied studies within the specific areas. The specific application areas are industrial biotechnology, environmental biotechnology and biotechnology for health. The division runs various multidisciplinary projects in collaboration with several industrial partners, which involve the development of microbial processes for transformation of biomass components into chemical building blocks suited for circular economy.

Work duties 

As a researcher, you shall:

• Be responsible for research tasks in the research program SeaPro (Eurostars) at the Division of Biotechnology. The research deals with the fermentation of seaweeds by microorganisms and analysis of probiotic properties.
• Actively collaborate with international partners in academia within the research project
• Write scientific articles based on his/her research
• Be a driving force in initiating interdisciplinary collaboration in seaweed fermentation and probiotic analysis at Lund University
• Participate in supervision of undergraduate and graduate students
• Administration related to the research work is included

Qualifications  

Required qualifications for the position are:

• PhD degree in Biotechnology or equivalent
• Very good oral and written proficiency in English. 
• Research experience in the fermentation of biomass and analysis of the results of these fermentations, with special focus on seaweed-related products
• Research experience in the fermentation of solid and soluble substrates and lactic acid bacteria
• Demonstrated scientific skills
• Experience in supervision of students.

Additional qualifications for the position are:

• Experience of participation and cooperation in multidisciplinary projects
• Experience in working with microbial cell factories at laboratory and pilot scale.
• Experience in bioinformatics and protein modelling for designing, constructing and testing metabolic pathways and production of biobased products.
• Good ability for written and oral communication

Consideration will also be given to good cooperation ability, drive and independence, and how the applicant through his/her experience and competence is judged to have the ability needed for the research project

Further information

The position is a fixed term employment for two years at 100 per cent of full time and starting 2022-07-01, or according to agreement.
