Postdoctoral position in Rehabilitation Engineering

Description of the workplace
The position is located at Certec, the Department of Design Sciences. Certec undertake research and education on Rehabilitation Engineering and Design. We are part of the Department of Design Sciences, Faculty of Engineering, Lund University. The overall purpose of our work is for people with disabilities to achieve better opportunities in all aspects of life.

Our work emanates from the individual’s perspective and her situation in order to find sustainable factors for the design of the totality of technological and human assistance in everyday life. We work with both individual solutions and design for diversity in society.

Co-creation is a central concept in our research – research that emerges across subject boundaries and together with the people involved in it. In co-creation, new technology and new design concepts are developed with the aim that all people can participate in and contribute to society.

The work in the advertised employment position takes place within the EU project ABILITY, where the goal is to develop a new type of tactile display that can show both graphics and braille. Our role in the project is to lead the work with user requirements and user experience, and will involve conducting user studies and user tests, but we also participate in designing the interaction for the developed product(s)..

Work duties

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning. The purpose of the position is to develop the independence as a researcher and to create the opportunity of further development.

Detailed description of the work duties:

  • research within the ABILITY project (user studies, interaction design)
  • teaching at undergraduate, advanced level and postgraduate level.
  • supervision of degree projects and doctoral students
  • actively seeking external research funding
  • collaboration with industry and wider society
  • administration related to the work duties listed above

Qualification requirements
Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position. The certificate proving the qualification requirement is met, must be received before the employment decision is made. Priority will be given to candidates who have graduated no more than three years ago before the last day for application. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Knowledge of UX / usability and co-creation
  • Experience of conducting user studies
  • Undergraduate degree with a technical specialization, Master of Science in Engineering or equivalent (eg computer science, media technology, technical design, information technology)
  • Knowledge of haptics
  • Experience of conducting user studies with participants with visual impairment / blindness

Assessment criteria

This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills.

Other qualifications:

  • Experience of co-creation / co-creation / participatory design
  • Good knowledge of Swedish, sufficient to carry out user activities with Swedish-speaking participants

Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Further information

This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of two years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”).
