Subject description The research project centres on the overarching theme of climate change loss and damage within the Formas funded project DICE. Loss and damage to climate change is an emerging policy and research area that tackles extreme climate related events, vulnerability and governance. The aim of this work is to work on measuring qualitative and quantitative aspects of non-economic loss and damage to climate change with a focus on and how loss and damage is treated and governed with contexts of Sweden, USA and Bangladesh. This work will focus on adding in perspectives from Australia and the specific conditions that face Australia in context of extreme climate change and affluent vulnerability.

Work duties

Detailed description of the work duties, such as:

  • Lead a survey on non-economic loss and damage in Australia with key partners.
  • Support surveys non-economic loss and damage in Sweden, Bangladesh, USA and other sites.
  • Lead academic articles on loss and damage in Australia, and contribute to comparatives with Sweden, USA and Bangladesh and other sites.
  • Contribute to defining and governing loss and damage to climate change
  • Contribute to events and activities within the loss and damage collaborative network
  • Support a LUCSUS workshop event at UNFCCC COP27
  • Seek external research funding
  • Contribute to teaching and supervision of graduate students

Qualification requirements

Applicants must have:

  • A PhD or equivalent research qualification with background in research on sustainability and human geography
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English
  • Documented knowledge and extensive experience of loss and damage to climate change
  • Documented knowledge and experience of Australia with existing networks and stakeholder collaborations
  • Documented experience of vulnerability in local and indigenous communities
  • Documented experience of qualitative ethnographic methods (oral histories and deep interviews) and quantitative Qualtrics
  • Background and basic knowledge of loss and damage in Sweden
  • In addition to a doctorate, the applicant must have a comprehensive list of subject-relevant (peer- reviewed) publications

Assessment criteria and other qualifications

  • Good knowledge of loss and damage, as well as the role of non-economic loss and damage in Australia.
    Experience in and ability to communicate loss and damage, vulnerability and disasters
  • Previously obtained external research funding in the area of loss and damage
    Experience in supervision and teaching
    Good perdagogic qualifications

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
