Work duties
This project assistant position will contribute to ongoing research with the main aim of determining how simple models of gene regulatory evolution on proto sex chromosomes can generate patterns of dosage compensation and (im)balance observed in empirical data. The specific duties will include the development of individual-based computer simulation models (in C++) of gene regulatory evolution on sex chromosomes in collaboration with the project leaders, curation of computer code repositories for the research project, and attendance of weekly project meetings.

Qualifications

  • Education: For this position, the candidate must hold a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Evolutionary Biology or Computer Science.
  • Experience: Qualified applicants should have research experience in evolutionary biology or ecology, with preference given to those with specialization in theoretical biology.
  • Knowledge: Coding proficiency in computer languages C++ and R.
  • Competences: Qualified applicants should have strong competencies in computer coding and evolutionary biology/ecology, with an ability to efficiently construct/troubleshoot/and exectue individual-based simulation of evolutionary processes, and a demonstrable ability to work collaboratively using version-control software and code repositories (e.g., Git, Github, etc.).

Other merits

  • Education: Upper-secondary school/higher education/coursework in natural sciences, engineering, or computer science.
  • Experience: work experience in computer coding and software design in C++ is a strong merit.
  • Knowledge: see above.
  • Competences: Familiarity with processes involved in sex chromosome evolution and/or gene regulatory networks is a plus.

We will place great emphasis on personal suitability. Consideration will also be given to i.e., strong collaborative skills (especially if working remotely) and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen the administrative work within the unit/department, as well as contribute to its future development.
