Description
We seek a project manager to take responsibility for coordinating the scientific and technical development of the LPJ-GUESS ecosystem model across multiple institutes into new release versions of the model software. The appointee will

be responsible for putting into practice the decisions of the LPJ-GUESS developer community regarding development of new and updated model functionality, and related infrastructure such as input and benchmarking datasets and software, conduct horizon scanning to identify new and emerging trends in climate and environmental science, and related opportunities for model application and advancement, consult with the LPJ-GUESS user community to identify priority areas for development, including developing appropriate funding proposals where necessary, provide mentoring support to members of the LPJ-GUESS developer community in the process of developing new model code, contribute to various research projects through activities such as model development, model application, data analysis and writing research papers and reports.

The appointee will be based at INES and a member of the LPJ-GUESS modelling research group. The LPJ-GUESS model is used widely for research in and outside Lund University (e.g. the Strategic Research Areas MERGE, http://www.merge.lu.se, and BECC, http://www.becc.lu.se).

Work duties
LPJ-GUESS management-specific roles:

  • Plan the workflows and allocation of tasks to incorporate new model developments in the trunk and new release versions of LPJ-GUESS, in close collaboration with the INES modelling group’s Scientific Programmer, research project leaders and relevant scientists.
  • Oversee the code merging process.
  • Ensure that core versions of the model (e.g. global and European versions) of the model remain functional (i.e. carry out model retuning and benchmark development).
  • Horizon-scanning and consultation to identify priority areas for development of new model functionality, related infrastructure, and documentation thereof.
  • Coordinate the graduate-level ClimBEco course “Ecosystem Modelling with LPJ-GUESS”

General role:

  • Apply for external funding, including to support own position.
  • Extend and improve the functionality of LPJ-GUESS through scientific and code development, and apply the model to a range of research problems.
  • Lead and contribute to the writing of peer-reviewed publications.
  • Supervise PhD and Masters students.
  • Contribute to other projects and tasks as appropriate, under the direction of relevant project leaders.

Participation in international meetings and workshops, and communication activities related to the tasks is expected.

Qualification requirements
Applicants must have:

  1. A PhD in a numerate science subject.
  2. Documented steps towards independent research leadership,
  3. Extensive experience in development and application of the LPJ-GUESS ecosystem model and the code-merging process,
  4. Advanced knowledge and experience of programming in C++, Python and Matlab.
  5. Documented record in leading and contributing to peer-reviewed publications.
  6. Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
