Placement and subject matter

The position is based at the Division of Art History and Visual Studies, which is a part of the Department of Arts and Cultural Sciences. The division offers education at first-cycle level and 60-credit Master’s level in art history and visual studies, as well as a two-year 120-credit Master’s programme in Visual Culture Studies. The division also teaches courses in English within the framework of Special Area Studies and a commissioned course aimed at professionals within the culture sector as well as health and social care. The division also offers third-cycle education in art history and visual studies.

The division conducts research on older, modern and contemporary art, architecture and the designed environment from historical, societal and aesthetic angles, as well as on images and other visual cues that are not categorised as art but that are important expressions of human knowledge and experience.

The link between art history and visual studies contributes to research that is less isolated by discipline.

Duties

Work duties consist primarily of teaching and supervision within the division’s first-cycle courses and programmes in art history and visual studies, as well as the Master’s programme in Visual Culture Studies. Teaching may also be needed in other closely related subject areas within the department. In addition to lectures and seminars, course development, course administration and course director duties as well as paper supervision are counted as teaching. Supervision and teaching at third-cycle level may also occur. At least 20 per cent of the role is allocated to research, which the applicant is expected to use for their own research and to apply for research funding in order to contribute to the development of the subject. The applicant should have a positive attitude towards taking on duties such as head of division. The successful applicant is also expected to actively participate in the division’s shared activities such as seminars.

Required qualifications

  • Awarded a PhD or has the corresponding research competence or other professional expertise that is of value in view of the subject matter of the post and the duties it will involve,
  • Demonstrated teaching expertise,
  • Completed training in teaching and learning in higher education of at least five weeks or equivalent competence that has been acquired by other means. If there are valid reasons, for example that the applicant has lacked opportunities to acquire the requisite knowledge in their former positions, an appointment can still be made. In such cases, the appointee is to complete the required training in teaching and learning in higher education within the first two years of employment, thereby fulfilling the requirement,
  • The ability to teach in Swedish and English.

Assessment criteria

  • the degree of research, teaching, administrative and other expertise that is of value in view of the work duties and subject matter of the post as well as other personal skills of relevance to perform the duties well
  • a good national and international standing as a researcher. The requirement for international expertise shall be assessed with consideration to the character and traditions of the subject.
  • a good teaching ability, including a good ability to conduct, develop and lead educational activities on different levels and using a variety of teaching methods
  • ability to participate in the supervision of doctoral students undertaking PhD studies
  • an ability to cooperate with wider society and communicate his or her activities
  • an ability to otherwise lead and develop activities

Specific qualifications of additional merit in descending order of importance

  • A PhD in Art History and Visual Studies, Theory of Art, or another relevant research studies subject, as well as documented research on issues relevant to art history and visual studies
  • Specialised expertise in modern and contemporary art and visual culture
  • documented experience of teaching within both visual art and urban environments
  • documented research, in addition to the PhD, relevant to art history and visual studies
  • documented experience of successfully applying for and receiving external research grants in competition
  • documented experience of supervising papers in first and second-cycle courses and study programmes
  • documented experience of developing and leading first and second-cycle courses and study programmes, and excellent collaboration skills
  • documented ability to undertake research collaborations

In the assessment of qualifications, teaching and research expertise receive equal consideration.
