The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.
Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.
Lund Observatory at the Department of Astronomy and Theoretical Physics invites applicants to a position as Postdoctoral fellow in Theoretical Astrophysics. We are seeking candidates with backgrounds in numerical models of galaxy formation/evolution or star formation. The position is for three years and anticipated starting date is summer/autumn 2023
Theoretical astrophysics at Lund Observatory encompasses galaxy formation, galactic dynamics and evolution, star formation and dynamics, planet formation and dynamics, high-energy astrophysics, and stellar evolution. We have strong observational links, including involvement in the ESA missions Gaia, 4MOST, CHEOPS, PLATO and LISA.
Description of work
The researcher will work in collaboration with Dr. Oscar Agertz and the galaxy formation group in Lund. Applicants are encouraged to define their own research, but will also get the opportunity to participate in projects on a wide range of topics, including cosmological zoom simulations of galaxy formation, the origin of the Milky Way, dwarf galaxy formation, and galactic scale models of the turbulent interstellar medium. The group has allocations on domestic supercomputer facilities, which the researcher will get access to.
Teaching may also be included but is voluntary. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning.
Eligibility
Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the last date for applications. The applicant does not need to hold a PhD degree when the application is sent in, but the degree must be awarded no later than the starting date of the position. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.
Assessment criteria
Postdoctoral fellow positions are research-focused appointments intended to form early stages of a science career. The assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.
Qualifications
The applicant must hold a PhD in astronomy, astrophysics or a related field. A background in numerical simulations of galaxies or star formation is especially meriting.
Terms of employment
This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of three years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”) between Lund University, SACO-S and OFR/S, dated February 1, 2022.
Application procedure
The application should include a CV, a copy of the PhD degree diploma or documents supporting that a PhD degree will be obtained by the start of the employment, a publication list, and a statement of research interests. The statement of research interests should not exceed 3 pages and should include your own research, to be carried out in Lund, as well as an indication of specific interests related to galaxy formation, galaxy evolution or star formation. Names and contact information of three persons willing to give references should be supplied.
