The position involves research, teaching and collaboration with the business community and public authorities in order to bring about societal change and renewal through knowledge development and innovation. Depending on their qualifications, the applicant may determine the precise focus of the position in the field of packaging technology in consultation with the division’s management.

Description of the workplace
The person appointed will be part of the Division of Packaging Logistics at the Department of Design Sciences. The division’s research group is an international leader in interdisciplinary research into packaging related to logistics, technology and sustainability. The division maintains a stimulating and international environment consisting of doctoral students, postdocs, teachers and professors from many parts of the world. Research, innovation and teaching take place here, in an open and creative climate with collaborations both within academia and with partners in industry.

The division’s senior researchers have a good knowledge of packaging technology, but their primary research focus is on packaging logistics. The position will therefore play an important part in complementing existing expertise in the research group. You will have the opportunity to work with us to further develop and build up expertise in the field. A doctoral student will also be recruited for this work.

In terms of resources, Lund University has advanced infrastructure in many areas that are of relevance to packaging technology. This can be exploited within the position, if necessary. The position is based in Lund, where you will have an office at Design Centre.

The position contributes a key skill in first and second cycle education. You will be teaching a course on packaging technology and development and a course on packaging materials. We also offer the opportunity to be part of an established Erasmus+ network with internationally recognised higher education institutions, where there are plenty of opportunities to gain international experience in research collaborations and leadership experience.

Subject
Packaging Logistics focusing on Packaging Technology.

Subject description
This position is focused on packaging technology, i.e. the technical aspects of developing, testing, producing and distributing packaging. This may, for example, include research into applying technology (new packaging materials, machines, sensors, manufacturing processes and analytical methods) to ensure the functionality, sustainability and circularity of packaging systems.

The subject requires scholarly competence in various aspects of packaging and insights into theoretical and methodological issues in the research domain, with emphasis on understanding, explaining and improving the impact of packaging systems on sustainable development. The subject also requires a good knowledge of methods for testing the strength of packaging and the properties and application of different packaging materials.

Work duties
Employment as an Assistant Professor is a career development position, which aims for the holder to develop his or her independence as a researcher and educator. The work duties mainly involve research and teaching. The position shall include the opportunity for five weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning.

Work duties include:

  • Research in the subject area.
  • Teaching at first, second and third cycle level in the research domain, such as advanced courses in Packaging Technology and Development and Packaging Materials.
  • Supervision of doctoral students and students working on degree projects.
  • Work on seeking external research funding.
  • Interaction with the business community and society.
  • Administration related to the tasks indicated above.

Qualification requirements
Appointment to Assistant Professor requires that the applicant has a PhD, or acquired corresponding research expertise.

Priority should be given to applicants who have completed their degree or acquired the equivalent expertise no more than five years before the last date for applications.

Assessment criteria
For appointment to Assistant Professor, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills.

Additional requirements

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • A proven ability to collaborate with and attract interest from the wider community
  • A broad knowledge and understanding of several aspects of the packaging technology research domain

Other qualifications

  • Experience of working in research-intensive, multidisciplinary environments
  • Experience of teaching in the subject area
  • Experience of seeking and obtaining external research funding
  • A demonstrated interest in leadership in academic and scholarly contexts
  • Experience of interaction with the business community in the research domain.

Consideration will also be given to ability to cooperate, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research, education and innovation within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment
This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of 6 years. The employment is regulated in accordance with Chapter 4 Section 12a§ HEA.

Promotion to Senior Lecturer in Packaging Logistics focusing on Packaging Technology
During the period of employment, an Assistant Professor can apply for promotion to a permanent position as Senior Lecturer if he or she has the required qualifications listed below, and is deemed suitable. An Assistant Professor can only apply for promotion once.

Qualification requirements
Appointment to Senior Lecturer requires that the applicant has:

  • A PhD or corresponding research competence or professional expertise considered important with regard to the subject matter of the post and the work duties it will involve.
  • Demonstrated teaching expertise.
  • Completed five weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning, or acquired equivalent knowledge by other means.

Assessment criteria
The assessment criteria specify the aspects to be taken into account, and the level to be achieved, in order for the assessment criteria to be deemed fulfilled. The following assessment criteria must be fulfilled for appointment to senior lecturer:

  • A good national and international standing as a researcher.
  • The requirement for international experience shall be assessed with consideration to the character and traditions of the subject.
  • Good teaching ability, including a good ability to conduct, develop and lead teaching and other educational activities on different levels and using a variety of teaching methods.
  • An ability to supervise doctoral students to achieve a PhD.
  • An ability to collaborate with wider society and communicate his or her activities.
  • A good general ability to lead and develop activities.

  • Progression in scholarly and teaching expertise.
  • Ability to seek external funding actively, independently and successfully.
  • Ability to contribute to the renewal of the enterprise.
