We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

Description of the workplace

The work will be based in the Molecular Biophysics Group within the Biomedical Center (BMC) at the Faculty of Medicine at Lund University, led by Professor Trevor Forsyth.  The major focus of the work will be transthyretin amyloidosis read more here.

Human transthyretin (TTR) is protein that transports thyroxine and retinol-binding protein (RBP) in the serum and cerebrospinal fluid. Wild-type TTR is intrinsically amyloidogenic, but a large number of TTR mutants have been identified, having remarkable tissue specificities.

The project will have good access to state-of-the-art facilities within the medical, natural science and engineering faculties, as well as being located in close proximity to the nearby MAX-IV synchrotron and ESS neutron beam facilities.

Duties and responsibilities

This project seeks to deepen molecular-level understanding of amyloidosis as well and will involve detailed comparative studies of amyloid material derived from in vitro and ex vivo sources. It will make extensive use of X-ray and neutron diffraction, cryo-EM, and a wide range of other biophysical techniques, using the MAX-IV and ESS facilities in Sweden as well as the ESRF and ILL X-ray/neutron sources in Grenoble, France.

A highly motivated postdoctoral researcher is sought to work on the molecular mechanisms underlying amyloid formation and the associated assembly processes.

As a postdoctor your work responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • You will need to perform sample preparation, data collection and analysis work as agreed during regular meetings.
  • You will also need to participate in regular laboratory tasks within the research group as part of the normal daily activities in a team-driven laboratory environment.
  • The work may require travel to institutes including ILL in France and other centres as needed for the project.
  • It may also require participation in national and international conferences as agreed.

Qualification

Demands, the candidate must have:

  • undergraduate and doctoral degrees in physics, biological sciences or other relevant fields of science.
  • Basic knowledge of protein expression and purification
  • Basic knowledge of protein crystallisation and crystallogenesis
  • Basic understanding of diffraction – X-ray/neutron crystallography, small angles X-ray/neutron scattering (SAXS/SANS) and corresponding data processing /analysis
  • ability to develop and conduct good quality research
  • Pproof of motivation and ability to work independently and as part of a team

The following abilities will be seen as meritorious for the position:

  • qualifications in physical/biological sciences as described above
  • ability to perform basic programming tasks expected for routine data management and interpretation.
  • ability to clearly formulate scientific results and to prepare reports according to need/demand
  • evidence of interpersonal competence as befits a researcher working in a highly interactive and collaborative environment.

Other information

The position is full-time for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension to a total of three years. Desired start date is February 1th 2023 or by agreement.

Eligibility
Appointment to the position of postdoc requires that the applicant has a PhD or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the application deadline. Under special circumstances the PhD can have been completed previous to the aforementioned three years.
